[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Next reading group meeting: Saturday 2 April 6pm

Hello all,

With apologies for not sending this out sooner - the next gathering of our reading group will take place this Saturday 2 April 18:00-19:30.

I will be hosting - my address is PH813, 2020 12th St NW (on 12th St between U and V).

Our 'reading' for discussion is this podcast (thanks Kavya for the suggestion!): https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/sister-dang-nghiem-403

It's hard to be a human. No matter how good things are for you, being alive is still hard; whatever your life circumstances are, we're all subject to impermanence and entropy. This episode dives into a five-part Buddhist list for being stronger in the face of whatever life throws at you. And the person who will be walking us through this list has an enormous amount of standing to talk about strength.

Sister Dang Nghiem, who goes by Sister D, is a nun in the Plum Village tradition and a disciple of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. She was born in Vietnam during the war, the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and an American soldier. Sister D experienced an unfathomable amount of loss before relocating to the US, where she became a doctor and later, after experiencing more loss, became a nun. She's written several books. Her most recent is Flowers in the Dark.

In this conversation, Sister D shares her story, and then walks us through The Five Strengths of Applied Zen Buddhism which include trust, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and insight.

Content Warning: This episode covers difficult topics including death, mental illness, and sexual abuse.

For those keen to come in-person, grateful you only attend if you are fully vaccinated + boosted. Mask will be personal choice and unless there is an Arctic wind chill like today I will have the windows open for air circulation. We also welcome people to join online via Zoom (details below, thanks Brandel!).

Zoom Login Info:

Grateful if you could let me know if you intend to attend in person via return email or text 2025310048 - I will send further instructions for finding my apartment for those who haven't been before.

And for those interested, we can grab dinner afterwards in the neighbourhood (or, given it is Saturday night on 14th/U Street, perhaps order some takeout!)

Looking forward to the discussion :)

Cheers
Philippa

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday, Pursing the Path of Devotion

Greetings Dear Community,

Our friend and colleague, Em Morrison, has had a family emergency and is unable to teach as planned on Sunday evening. We wish her and her family all the best!

I'll be there on Sunday to welcome our special guest, Ellen McSweeney who is back in the DC area for just a few weeks. Musician, writer, and licensed therapist, Ellen will be sharing reflections on her experience as a current resident at the Monastic Academy for the Preservation of Life on Earth (MAPLE) in Vermont. Here's a bit from Ellen about what brought her to MAPLE:

Several years ago, I woke up to the seriousness of our planetary crises and felt a calling to live in alignment with these difficult truths. However, as I made various attempts to respond to this calling, I frequently found myself overwhelmed by the immensity of the challenge. I came to recognize that my mind and heart would need significantly more training in order to do work that was truly beneficial. I also knew I couldn't do this work alone. This is why I've chosen to become a resident at MAPLE, which aims to create awakened leaders who can respond to existential risk with wisdom and love. It's a deep privilege for me to be part of this project — totally transforming myself while building a new kind of 21st-century wisdom institution.

Our Sangha will gather from 7-8:30 at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW. You can also join us via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below.

With love and gratitude,
Kristin

Real talk: I am coming at the last minute here so I honestly don't know what the current COVID vaccination/mask policy is for IMCW nor Yoga District. So we'll have to stick to the conservative route, status quo. Here's the protocol:

If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of boosted vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com   or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Online men's therapy group based in mindfulness

Hi dharma friends,

My online men's therapy group, True Confidence, has a few open slots for our 8-week program starting the evening of Tuesday April 5, 2022.

My co-leader and I help those who have been socialized as men notice, have compassion for, and find new ways of relating with traditional masculine norms that no longer serve them. We use mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence-based therapy used for healing trauma.

After our first 8-week run, all the participants wanted to continue with the group and have signed up for the next 8 weeks.

The cost is $100/session for DC and Maryland residents (we don't take insurance, but you likely get out-of-network reimbursement from your provider). Email me at jeremy@jeremymohler.blog to set up a 15-minute call to see if you're a good fit for the group. If you know someone who might be interested, have them email me.

We'd love to have you in the group!

Jeremy

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday with Downtown Dharma: Finding Freedom from Fear

Greetings Dear Community,

First, thank you for all the warm wishes for recovery from my bike accident. These were well-received and meant a lot to me. I have far to go but I'm doing very well, even well enough to teach this Sunday at Yoga District! You might recall that I had planned to offer some reflections on fear and, as it turned out, the accident has given me an excellent opportunity to practice with fear. So here's that same framing from a month ago:

We know we're in the grip of explicit fear when we feel its characteristic tightening of our chest or when it shakes our knees and widens our eyes. Yet implicit fear, nearly undetectable as such, can pervade our lives, distorting perception, constraining the heart, and limiting our sense of possibility.

This Sunday, we'll explore how the dharma can support us in meeting fear and changing the inner balance of power.
We will gather this evening from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details are at the bottom of this email. If you plan to join in person, please read on as both Yoga District and IMCW have changed their COVID-related requirements.

I hope to see you there!

Kristin

Attending In Person

Summary: all in-person attendees should be fully vaccinated, masks will be optional, arrive early!

Details:

  • IMCW is reworking their COVID-policy and it will be finalized next week. Per the draft policy, which we will use this Sunday, neither masks nor proof of vaccination are required but IMCW requests that all those attending Sangha in person are fully vaccinated against COVID19.
  • Yoga District no longer requires advanced registration.
  • Please endeavour to come 10 minutes early, around 6:50, to get settled. As we staff these events with volunteers from the Sangha, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10.
  • Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Need for additional volunteers on Sunday nights

Hi all,

I hope everyone is enjoying (or planning to enjoy!) the lovely sunny Friday. We are in need of some additional volunteers to help with setting up and checking folks into the studio on Sunday nights. Some of our usual volunteers are either currently away for an extended period or otherwise busy at this time.

Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering on a regular basis for the next few months. The commitment involves getting to sangha early around 6:30 pm and then closing the studio afterwards. You are free to volunteer as often as you would like, but we do need to have you register with Yoga District beforehand. I can help facilitate that process.

Best,

Kavya

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] An Evening with Downtown Dharma

Downtown-Dharma.jpg

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  3/6/2022  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location

  • In-person:1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitators- Travis M. Spencer

Mindful Helper: Elicia Renee Wright

This Sunday's topic and practice will be an opportunity to participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another. We will discuss our aspirations for our lives as we move into Spring 2022.

During our check-in, We will respond to the following questions:

  • What will I nurture and allow to blossom in my life's practice?
  • What am I letting go of as I make space for my seeds of awakening?

During my dharma share, I will explore the following questions:

  • What "seeds of awakening" are we planting in this season of our lives?

Afterward, you are invited to participate in our Spring Releasing ceremony and Ruth King's METTA Prayer for racial healing.

"The spring wakes us, nurtures us, and revitalizes us. How often does your spring come? If you are a prisoner of the calendar, it comes once a year. If you are creating authentic power, it comes frequently, or very frequently." --Gary Zukav

We need your help to make 2022 great!

Increased Demand for Basic Needs of Food, SNAP and Financial Assistance for Housing

The economic effects of the pandemic have been particularly severe for many individuals and families in our community who were already living on the brink of poverty and homelessness. Although the pandemic has surged and subsided over the last few months, the negative impact on our clients persists.

In recent weeks, Mission of Love Charities has seen a 30% increase in the number of individuals, families, and children who need food, help with SNAP applications, and rental and utilities financial assistance. Helping our clients remains a top priority for MOLC, and currently we are only able to provide this assistance with the financial help of government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. We need your help during these times. Please consider making a donation to support our efforts in the community.
