[Downtown Dharma Listserve] The Pith

Hi all,

I listened to the recording of last nights talk and realized that it might be helpful to boil it down to a few statements that I'd like to share.

1. Grasping at power is a form of craving and will not lead to peace, harmony, or well being. You can, however, give power to peace by listening, giving, loving, and speaking what is true, helpful, and timely.

2. It does not work to try to be Thich Nhat Hanh, a Wheel Turning Monarch, or a "good progressive." Instead, develop a mind that sees as clearly as Thay's, then respond to your present circumstances with wisdom and compassion. Trying to become something - even a Good Samaritan - leads to suffering if it reinforces our identity view.

3. Open your eyes and ears to human suffering but be skeptical of political views shared by people who have not cultivated deep wisdom and compassion. The news is rife with such views.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday

Dear ones,

We will meet in person and online this Sunday to meditate, connect, and explore the dharma. The topic this week will be politics and the dharma.

Proof of vaccination and booster are required to attend in person. Please see details below.

Attending In Person-
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

To this end, we are running a donation-based meditation retreat for young people near New York & Boston, with the meditation teacher Beth Upton, who was a Buddhist monk studying with Pa Auk Sayadaw in Myanmar for 10 years. If you are able to share this opportunity with anyone in your Sangha or with other Sangha's you're connected with who may find value in this retreat. It is March 3rd to 6th over a long weekend and geared towards folks under 36 years of age.

This Sunday's topic is a finale of our exploration of our individual dharma. In the vein of the FLOW concept, we look deeply at "Welcoming Growth Edges."

F.L.O.W. is:

Following your intuition.
Letting go of expectations and outcomes.
Owning your experience.
Welcoming growth edges.

During our time together we will participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another. We will continue our deep dive and explore the following question:

What does it mean to "welcome growth edges?
What inhibits our growth and awakening?

Afterward, we welcome you to participate in Ruth King's Metta prayer for racial healing.

Attending In Person-
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.
We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

We all know from everyday experience that our sense of "how is it right now?" is often, well, complicated. How we describe to ourselves and to others "what is happening" utterly depends on what aspect of experience we focus on as well as what frame and view we apply.
