[dcphp-dev] Information Organization for Image Uploads

Colleagues:

I'm looking for some design-level thinking / advice about image uploads.  The client is a publishing platform with a requirement for several different image sizes and crops to be made from original images.  Each image may be cropped several times to isolate different parts of an original, and the resulting cropped images need to be stored at 1024x768, 800x600, etc.  As a result, each original could produce as few as 10 and as many as 30 to 50 final images.

This is a Laravel RESTful app.  Image resizing and storage is pretty much done at the "one-off" level, but I'm feeling queasy about the sheer number of image files and the right directory/file structure for image storage.

My instincts are to store a database row that holds some meta information about the original image and the URLs of the original and the primary crop.  Beyond that, I'm wondering about best practices for a RESTful URL and directory structure.  Let's say I want to retrieve image #42 in a few different sizes.  Does it make sense to store a separate sub-directory for image #42, with paths to each image?

//path/to/images/42/original
//path/to/images/42/1024x768
//path/to/images/42/800x600
//path/to/images/42/100x75

If you have some ideas and a moment to talk, please send me a phone number and a good time to call.  An email to john.r.paseur@saic.com or a call to 703.346.0600 will be most welcome.

Thanks and warm holiday regards,

Ray

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] New Mt Pleasant group house looking for a housemate

Hello all,

A group house is starting in Mt Pleasant in a lovely, updated rowhouse, and we need one more person to fill out our group of four. I thought the folks on this list would share some of the values that can make living with people great. There's plenty of space here to enjoy other thoughtful housemates and have privacy.

Two women and one man in their late 20s are looking for a social, mature, conscientious person in their late 20s/30s who's interested in helping create a welcoming home. The room available is actually 2 rooms -- a really huge space, freshly painted, with its own private bathroom. Check out the craigslist post for more details:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/roo/4788815466.html

Please spread the word and send me an email if you know of someone who'd be interested. The move-in date is January 1 or before. Thank you for reading!

Best,
Abby

[dcphp-dev] [job] Junior Developer - Global Thinking - Alexandria, VA

Job Title: Platform Developer, I

Writing good software requires a creative mindset. Software production is not a manufacturing process; it is an art. As a Platform Developer, you will be responsible for writing scripts, utilities, and programs to accomplish a variety of tasks: from automating human work to rendering a beautifully designed user interface.

Your responsibility is to focus on feature development in our asset management platform. This is a web-based software-as-a-service product, so it is important that you understand the foundations of the web, how data moves around the Internet, and how you can manipulate it. Our platform transcends the digital space as it integrates with the physical manufacturing processes of the print and publishing world. You will have the opportunity to work with and influence that process, sometimes even integrating directly with machinery.

Our team is an elite design and programming task force. We take the dreams of our industry's most innovative minds and weave them into reality. Operating in the space between the digital and physical realms, our products and services put us on the forefront of innovation in the printing industry. Printing is an old world business, in many ways hindered by an inability to embrace new technology. Our job is not to craft solutions that just digitize outdated practices and habits, but to redefine people's assumptions about what is possible.

Things that you will be doing:

  • working with a diverse team of technical experts

  • producing code that will power marketing and manufacturing processes

  • reviewing other team members' code

  • supporting the features that you develop

  • influencing the architecture of a platform akin to the "Internet of things"

Technical skills that will help you in this role:

  • Database design

  • Object-oriented programming

  • PHP 5.3+

  • MySQL

  • HTML / CSS

  • Javascript

  • Git / Git-flow

You will succeed in this role if you are:

  • a dedicated craftsman who regularly improves and sharpens his or her skills

  • self-motivated, ambitious, detail-oriented, and organized

  • able to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced professional environment

  • capable of visualizing technical solutions when presented with conceptual business needs

  • interested in having fun while achieving great results, working with awesome people, and beer

Where you can go from here:

  • Platform Developer, II - more experienced, more responsible

  • Platform Engineer - other Platform Developers report to you

How to apply:

  • Email your resume and cover letter to devjobs@globalthinking.com. Please include links to your github, bitbucket, or personal website.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] People of Faith Vigil on Friday, 6-8 pm

Hi All,

The candle light vigil is tonight. In remembrance of the deaths of
Eric Garner and Michael Brown, it will help shine a light on police
aggression. If you'd like to join us, we plan to meet up at 16th and W
around 6:15pm.

Some of us are meeting at my place at 5:45pm and walking down to 16th
and W together. We may do a brief sit beforehand. If you would like to
walk down with us, let me know and I'll send you my address.

Bring a candle, and one to share, if you can.

Namaste,
Scott

Thanks for sharing.

Related, I am going to the march on Saturday -- 10:30 -- Freedom Plaza -- and would appreciate company. Please let me know if any of you are going.

Hi all!

It looks like a lovely group is forming to participate in the Faith Vigil tomorrow. Meanwhile, folks nationally are planning to converge on DC Saturday for march and actions against police brutality (see article in the Hill here)

Tara received the following private Facebook post from practitioners traveling in from Phoenix, AZ, who could use some support with a place to take care of personal needs such as showering while they are here (they are not staying the night in DC, but just coming for a turn-around trip!). I was thinking that the best way to address their needs would be if there were 2 or 3 of us with homes near one another (Kristin and I are in Adams Morgan) who could host members of the group during the day on Saturday (we wouldn't want to send them all over DC/far away from another) - either in the morning or the evening, pre/post march on Saturday. I immediately thought of this listserve as some of you might be able to offer this kind of hospitality. The size of the group is 10, so I don't think one household could do it. If you have ideas or connections at a local gym or Y that you think could/would host everyone at once, that would also be great.

Given Melissa's recent warning about sharing personal info on the googlegroup, how about folks respond directly to me (not the listserve) about this.

Blessings,
Eleanor

Ms. Brach and Community,
I am a distant student (from Phoenix, Arizona) through Dharma Seed and I have appreciated you talks and meditations for the last year or so. Somehow each talk is what I need to hear in the moment.

Today I right for guidance and support in an upcoming journey. There is a small group of Phoenicians driving to the DC area for the March Against Police Brutality. There will be just about 10 of us on a turn around trip. I ask first that you keep is and all the people marching in your thoughts.

Second, I ask for myself if there is a particular meditation you suggest for strength and stamina through these tough times. I find myself struggling to focus. I feel small, alone and with a great deal of angst. Guidance is appreciated.

Lastly, can you direct me and my group to any places where our group can get support for taking care of personal needs like showering. As I mentioned we are on a turnaround trip and none of us have family in the immediate area. If you could direct us to a welcoming YMCA, yoga studio, or other community center that would be really helpful.

I am sure you and your community are very busy. We would be deeply grateful for any support that you could give.

Thank you
Laci

What a sweet group develping ... Scott, what is your address? Would you like to set a specific time for us to gather? Should we bring any kind of food or drink? I have one other contact from the "White Awake" group mailing list that I'm inviting, and would love to forward the details to her. The hope is that Kristin and I will make it as well.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Next Buddha Brunch: December 20th

Greetings, sangha members,

I'll be hosting the next Buddha Brunch on Saturday, December 20th at 11 am. I'd like to have a discussion about how we reconcile the cultivation of both compassion and detachment in our lives.

Here are a couple of readings to start your thinking:

Please e-mail me if you'd like to join and I'll send you my address a few days before we gather.

Warm wishes,
Andrea

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] People of Faith Vigil on Friday, 6-8 pm

Hi All,

I am planning to attend the vigil and am interested in seeing if
people would be interesting in gathering before and/or after for
meditation and discussion.

Here's what I am thinking:
- meet before hand at 6:00pm (ish) for a meditation
- walk to 16th street
- gather afterwards for hot chocolate/tea

If folks are interested, I'd be happy to host.

Scott
