[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sangha gathering on Sun, Nov 5: Defining our mission

Hi friends,

It's not too late to join for a gathering this Sunday to help shape Downtown Dharma's mission and direction. Our beloved sangha member and volunteer, Audrey Voorhees, has kindly volunteered to facilitate us through several interactive exercises.

Here are the details:

● WhenSunday, Nov 5, 10am to 2pm (including time for shared lunch)
● Where: Mt Pleasant DC (1613 Harvard St NW), or by Zoom
● HowPlease RSVP here.

Please don't hesitate to come if you're new to the group: we want to hear from all perspectives! We have some decisions to make in the next few months and we are hoping that this exercise helps guide our direction.

Nick and Vince are kindly hosting this session and offering a homemade lunch to those attending in person (vegan homemade chickpea peanut stew). Feel free to bring something in addition, or just bring your lovely self!

Again, please RSVP here so we know how many chairs to set up!

With love,

Kavya

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday with Downtown Dharma Sangha: Taking Refuge in the Three Treasures

The starting point of Buddhism is the idea that everyone suffers and that suffering is part of the world. Buddhism offers a way out: we can loosen the grip of our suffering by taking refuge in the universal Treasures: the ideal offered by the Buddha, the Dharma practice of wisdom and compassion, and the community of Sangha. Come take refuge with us Sunday evening!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday - Mindfulness and Social Stability

Dear dharma friends,

Wishing you all well this weekend. Looking forward to being together tomorrow night for meditation, teaching and community - 7-8:30pm at Yoga District (1910 14th St NW, 3rd Floor) and via Zoom. In addition to our Sunday sits, check out some upcoming opportunities to gather together, including the IMCW Picnic Oct 28 (see attached flyer), and our sangha visioning session on Nov 5 (RSVP here).

In preparation for these events, we'll discuss one of the Buddha's teachings on seven steps to creating healthy, thriving societies. Check out the full text here. TL;DR?
  1. Meet often
  2. and in harmony
  3. make agreements and stick to them
  4. respect elders
  5. empower the marginalized
  6. honor tradition
  7. foster enlightenment here and now.
So let's get to it :) See you soon.

Shawn

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] October DD Book Club - Friday, Oct 27 - IFS

Dear friends (and all the parts that make you all),

For October's Downtown Dharma Book Club, we will be discussing Internal Family Systems (IFS).

  • Specifically, the podcast where our very own Josh Malina interviews the creator of IFS, available at  https://spotify.link/jF3PT0YgqDb.
  • We also have a book - No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model - available at, https://a.co/d/38OxI10.

So if you have a bit of time, just listen to the podcast; if you have more, also read the book.

I have the honor of hosting the gathering.  Please note that it will be at 6PM on Friday, Oct 27, which is a departure from our typical Saturday.    My apartment is located in Adams Morgan at: 1901 Biltmore St NW.

Please RSVP by signing up:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jGyNrmSFGBz2B26Y8BzWhZVyHULzdulErSfkiSJ7BX8/edit?usp=sharing. Let's cap attendance at 11 as my place is cozy, and will need room for all our parts.  Just one sign up per person :)

Last, if you would like to join remotely, please ping me and we can organize a link.

May you be well,

-Roman

Hi friends,

My name is B.I. I am a former Downtown Dharma member and am very fond of this sangha and community.

I'm reaching out about an event the organization I work for is hosting tomorrow evening. The event is called Right Livelihood in Practice. It will be a 2-hour exploration of how meditation can act as a foundation for creating extraordinary value in the world and in our work.

The event will be led by Darius Norrel, founder & director of People and Their Brilliance, an organization devoted to helping people change mindsets to create brilliant, more meaningful careers and vocations. Darius weaves together a lot of meditation experience (over 15 years) with experience helping people in their vocations. We believe the event will be rich, engaging and meaningful for everyone. Like all of our events, it is offered in the spirit of dana (generosity), and it's only for folks 18-35 years old.

The event will be at Yoga in the Daily Life, a yoga and meditation studio in Alexandria, VA. We hope you will consider joining us and registering! And please pass along this flyer to friends who you think might be interested 🙂

With love and gratitude,
Benjamin // "B.I."

Audrey will be leading us through a series of collaborative exercises to help us arrive at new mission and vision statements for Downtown Dharma. This is an exciting step for our sangha!

We hope you can join. Here are the details:

When: Sunday, Nov 5, 10am to 2pm (including time for shared lunch)
Where: Mt Pleasant DC (1613 Harvard St NW), or by Zoom
How: Please RSVP here.

Your presence matters, whether you've been with us for years, or are just getting to know the sangha.

Nick and I are happy to host. For those in person, expect a homemade chickpea peanut stew (vegan) for a community lunch. You're welcome to bring something else to share, or simply come as you are.

Again, please RSVP here so we know how many chairs to set up!
