Dear Spiritual Friends,

I'm excited to invite you to a very special online weekend retreat I'm offering with the Christine Center on Sept. 10-12.

It's a truly special retreat because our practice theme is the profoundest of all human experiences—love.

With love all goes well in this life; while in its absence, only suffering.

Why would this be so?

Because quite simply, love is the very nature of reality.

If we know the nature of reality as love, we're thus totally in synch with reality in every moment.

In other words, reality is exactly opposite how we usually understand it.

Reality isn't cold, cruel and unforgiving. It's actually pure love, the ultimate refuge, and indeed the only thing we ever truly experience—if we only knew it!

Which we can, in meditation.

In meditation we can instantly, directly, and unforgettably experience love as the one abiding reality—and forever be transformed.

To know reality as love is the aim of this retreat, nothing less.

I do hope you'll watch the short video above as my personal invitation to you to attend this retreat.

It would be wonderful to practice with you.

For full details on registration, the daily schedule, suggested readings and more, click here or anywhere on the graphic below.

With love

Doug

Realizing Our True Nature
Join us on Monday, August 30, from 7:30-9:00 p.m., for meditation and discussion. We are honored to be joined this week by veteran meditation teacher Doug McGill, who will lead us in meditation and give a talk on what he calls "The Open Secret." Doug writes:

A stubborn paradox of meditation is that the very effort we put towards liberation, often becomes the biggest obstacle to achieving it. Meanwhile the happiness we seek is already fully present and available, because happiness is the very essence of our being.

In this session, we'll look at common ways we miss the open secret of our true nature as complete ease and contentment; and we'll practice how to see that essence effortlessly, to nourish it, and to live from it fully.

Doug McGill founded and for 16 years was the Guiding Teacher of the Rochester Meditation Center in Rochester, MN. In 2019, he edited "Relax and Be Aware: Mindfulness Meditations for Clarity, Confidence and Wisdom," a concise guide to the meditation of Sayadaw U Tejaniya. Since 2013 he has published "The Daily Tejaniya," a daily email practice reminder from Sayadaw. Since 2013 he has taught a six-week "Introduction to Awareness Meditation" class several times a year. He learned insight meditation from Steve Armstrong, Kamala Masters and S.N. Goenka; and the Direct Path from Rupert Spira. From 1979 to 1999 he was a reporter at The New York Times and a bureau chief for Bloomberg News based in Tokyo, London and Hong Kong.

As in the past few weeks, the sangha will be conducted both in-person at St. Mark's and online via Zoom. Join us:

Hi all,

We'll be meeting for the third and final time to discuss  Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators by Guy Armstrong on Saturday, August 21 at 6pm. We'll be discussing Part II (Phenomena) and Part III (Awareness). Personally, I've deeply enjoyed reading this book and have felt it have a fruitful impact on my practice. The discussions at the first two meetings have been free-ranging and (in my opinion) some of the most insightful since we started this book club almost 2 years ago. I'm really looking forward to finishing it out! There is no pressure to have read the book or have attended the previous two sessions in order to participate.

Please email me at lukehorvathnd@gmail.com if you'd like to RSVP so that I know how many chairs to arrange.
