[dcphp-dev] Re: How can we fix the issue with the deprecated function ?

Relevant:

I've always just sucked it up and updated. If the codebase is significantly large then you might consider writing a PHP/Shell script to update all of the existing code.

Meet MOLC's 2013 Humanitarian Awards Honorees

MOLC will hold its 9th Annual Lighting Pathways Humanitarian Awards Ceremony and Silent Auction on Thursday, May 16, at the Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville.

This year’s top honoree and recipient of the Decatur "Bucky" Trotter Humanitarian Award is Judge William H. “Billy” Murphy, Jr., founder, and senior partner of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy and former Circuit Court Judge for Baltimore City. Murphy’s father, William H. Murphy, Sr., was one of the first African American judges to preside in Maryland. As the son of a judge, Murphy says, “segregation was an up-close and personal thing for me.” He said that the injustices that he experienced as a young man inspired him to undertake a lifelong fight for the rights of under-represented communities. Murphy has more than 42 years of practice in state and federal courts. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law.

The 2013 recipients of the Candle of Service Award are Elizabeth M. Hewlett, chair, Prince George’s Park and Planning Board and the Maryland-National Capital Park (M-NCPPC and Planning Commission, and Albert Wynn, former congressman.

Hewlett is being honored for her extensive philanthropic, volunteer and mentoring work devoted to programs and causes that benefit young people in Prince George’s County. Among her many accomplishments, she has supported or helped create programs that provide tutoring, field trips, and preparation for the SAT, as well as programs that attract high school students to the legal profession. Hewlett holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and a law degree from Boston College Law School.

Albert Wynn began his career as executive director of the Prince George’s County Consumer Protection Commission, working to protect county residents from unscrupulous business practices. After opening a law practice, he was elected state delegate, and later state senator. Elected to Congress in 1992, Wynn was an early supporter of the Mission of Love Charities and helped lobby for local funding. Wynn received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his law degree from Georgetown University.

This year, a special award will be presented to Peter Franchot, Maryland’s 33rd comptroller. Prior to being elected to this position in 2006, Franchot served 20 years in the Maryland General Assembly. Throughout his career, he has been a strong advocate for education, health care, transportation and environmental protection initiatives. Since becoming the state's chief fiscal officer, Franchot has worked to level the playing field for Maryland taxpayers. He has closed tax loopholes, launched the first-in-the-nation program to ensure that federal contractors are paying their fair share in state taxes, and has sought statewide compliance with Maryland's minority business enterprise participation goals. Franchot received his bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, and his J.D. from Northeastern School of Law.

Fourteen Graduate Life Skills Program

MOLC recently held a graduation ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of 14 people who completed the organization’s Life Skills Work Readiness Program (LSWRP). In partnership with Giant Food, LSWRP is a three-month program aimed at developing participants’ self-esteem, transforming their thinking and behavior, and providing them with essential skills so that they will be successful in the workplace and in life.

In opening remarks, MOLC Founder Dr. Douglas  Edwards said, “This is a transformation of your life.  Any mistake that you’ve made in the past, bury it, memorialize it, and leave it in the past. Your whole life is ahead of you. This is a new chapter in a brand new book, depicting who you are and who you will be hereafter.”

Maryrose Lyles, MOLC acting program director, said, “This is a day of renewal and restoration. This is a new year with new possibilities, new hopes . . . . For some of our graduates, Giant is a big deal. Don’t be deceived that it is just a grocery store. In Giant, there’s room for careers. It’s where you can come in as a bagger, and five or six years down the line, you can be a manager."

Amber Venable, a program participant, said, “I learned to believe and have faith in everything I do in life. The program showed me how to conduct myself in the workplace, to be more outgoing, to have confidence regardless of the situation, and to always stay positive. I experienced something new every time I came to class and learned some things about myself that I never knew. I recommend this program to anyone who is willing to make a change in their lives.“

All graduates of the LSWRP, have the opportunity to interview for jobs at Giant Food, and 100 percent of those who interviewed have received an employment offer from Giant.

Those honored at the January graduation are as follows:

Robert Adams
Keisa  Barber
Nicole Campbell
Wilma Childress
Valerie Dunaway
Albert Jamison
Christian Osborne
Sherita Owens
Ernest Pinckney
Robert Robinson
