[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday @ Flow

Dear friends,

Pema Chodron has written that "death and hopelessness provide proper motivation- proper motivation for living an insightful, compassionate life."   This week we will explore the often muddled concepts of hope and hopelessness and how a clear understanding of these concepts can support us along the path.

We will meet at Flow Yoga at 1450 P Street from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM to connect, meditate and explore this dharma. Please remember that the front door closes at 6:05 so please be on time. Our meeting space is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Cushions, back jacks, and a couple of folding chairs will be provided. If you are able to come early to help set up, that would be most appreciated.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] New Years Eve Gathering at CML from 8pm-after midnight

Dear Friends,

I hope all is well with you. Just an FYI that the Center for Mindful Living (CML) located at 4708 Wisconsin Ave, Washington, DC 20016, is holding a New Year's Eve gathering from 8pm to after midnight to complete 2019 and mindfully bring in 2020.

The Meditation (front) room will be held in quiet/stillness for meditation, and the Dharma (back, bigger) room for group activities, including eating (potluck), meditating, movement and sharing. Participants can go back and forth between the two rooms. It is also fine to stop by for a bit or stay the whole evening.

CML is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step at the front of the building and a flight of stairs to reach the space (located on the second floor).

There is no cost for this event. All are welcome. More details will be posted on the CML website https://living-mindfully.org/calendar. If you have questions please email info@living-mindfully.org. An event flyer is also attached.

I look forward to seeing you in 2020, if not before!

Blessings,
Linda

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma Reading Group 1/12

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday season! I wanted to share the readings and location for our next Dharma reading group meeting on January 12th at 4 pm. We chose to have the meeting on the 12th instead of the third Sunday, the 19th, because of Martin Luther King day.

The meeting will take place at Danny's house at 3220 17th St NW Apt 201 (Thanks for hosting!).

To continue upon our theme of socially engaged Buddhism, this month's readings are on History, Sociopolitical Movements, and Buddhist Practice.  A Google drive link as well as a pdf is provided below.

If you are planning on joining, please email me so that I have a rough headcount. We'll provide some snacks, and feel free to bring something for sharing if you would like.

Our book club has a WhatsApp group to make coordination and sharing easier. If you'd like to be added, please send me your phone number.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Best,

Kavya Sekar

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Embodying Mindfulness: Touching the Heart of the Buddha

All,
Unfortunately, I will not be able to join the group for at least the next couple of Sundays.  On Wednesday, I fell down the last part of a Metro escalator and had to go to the ER. Considering that I banged my head, I was very lucky that I escaped with only a few pelvic fractures. I"m staying at a friend's house now and plan to go home tomorrow. My prognosis is good, but getting around is slow, and my recovery will require a lot of patience. Trying to call on my practice for help. Climbing the stairs at Flow is not a remote possibility right now. I'm trying to take care of myself while also remembering that it's not all about me. I will miss the sangha but wanted to at least send greetings.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma Reading Group Sunday 12/15

Hi friends,

We'll be holding our monthly Dharma Book club meeting next Sunday 12/15 at 4:00pm. The location will be at my house in Columbia Heights. The address is 2726 13th Street, NW. Our reading group will be continuing with the readings from last month on socially engaged Buddhism. The group felt that the material and insights gleaned was rich enough for a follow-on discussion. Here is a link to the readings and a pdf is also attached.

If you are planning on joining, please let me know so that I have a rough headcount. I'll provide some snacks, and feel free to bring something for sharing if you would like.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Flow

Dear friends,

Ajahn Chah, a well respected (now deceased) monk in our tradition, once asked a group of young, eager practitioners a simple question: "Have you had enough yet?" Describing the encounter, another well respected monk in this tradition named Thanissara said that the question was like a life raft thrown to her in choppy seas. She said it cut to the quick.

This week we will use Ajahn Chah's question as a starting point for an exploration of what the Buddha's teachings are really pointing to. We may not be ready for this question to cut us to the quick, but it may open up some fruitful avenues of inquiry within the mind.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Flow Yoga: Authentic Gratitude

Greetings Friends,

(You probably saw this coming.) This Sunday evening, we'll explore the goodness of gratitude, as both wisdom and practice. The why and how of appreciation can be learned and it turns out your brain really likes gratitude. The mind that sees through the eyes of gratitude, without forcing it, finds ease and natural joy.

I hope to see you there.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sangha Update!

Dear friends,

A day after Thanksgiving, it feels appropriate to share gratitude for this loving, wholesome community. Thank you for showing up each week to walk the path and support others in their journeys.

I'm also grateful that I had enough free time today to write everyone to share the survey results as well as some of the changes taking place in response to the collective wisdom. This email is fairly lengthy and full of information, so let me assure those of you who may not read the rest of it that the basic elements of the sangha are the same. We will still meet from 6:00 - 7:30 at Flow on Sundays. One minor exception is that once every three months (or so) we will host a potluck in lieu of a regular class. The time and location will be the same as if it were a regular class and we will still meditate for 30 minutes at the start, but unlike a regular class, we will eat and communue following the meditation. The first potluck will be 12/22.

Before I get to results and updates, a few more thanks are in order. Thank you to Vince Lampone for building the survey and helping us digest the information. Also thank you to everyone who responded. The responses struck us as careful, helpful, and kind - wise speech in action. As a teaching team, we have done our best to digest the new information, discuss what changes are possible, and set these changes into motion. This is, of course, an ongoing process and we ask for your continued input and patience as we develop as a community.

Survey Results

I have attached the full results to this email in the form of an excel spreadsheet. As you will see, they are anonymous. If you'd like a shorter version, please read the summary that Vince wrote below.

Summary:
What's working well?
Many people express appreciation for the space at Flow, seeing it as welcoming and appropriate for our community. They appreciate the wisdom, preparation, and diverse contributions of the teachers. And they like the sense of community that exists in the group.

What can be strengthened?
A number of folks want more time for group sharing and discussion after weekly dharma talks. Other items mentioned by more than one person: a desire for more diversity in the sangha; outside events to build community; peer-led sanghas; consistent weekly emails announcing the topic; discussions that apply the dharma to real life (e.g. social issues, personal challenges); and issues re: accessibility (e.g. stairs, seating options).

Sangha Updates

These are the changes that we have already made or are planning to make in response to the survey results.

Communication
* The teaching team has set the intention to be more diligent about emailing the listserv, on Fridays, with the teaching topic and relevant weekly announcements.

Community Building
* To further support community building, we will host a quarterly potluck at Flow in lieu of regular class. The time will be the same, 6:00 - 7:30 and the location will be the same. Many sangha members wanted more time to socialize and get to know each other, and we thought that this would be a helpful way of facilitating that, without asking people to squeeze another item into their schedules. As of right now, the plan is to meditate first and then eat. These events will usually be held around the solstices and equinoxes. The first potluck will be 12/22.

* We will continue to announce sangha-related events each week. Members have already organized two recurring events: a monthly dinner that typically meets after class on the first Sunday of each month and a monthly book club that meets at people's homes usually before class. We will do our best to remind everyone about these events. The next dinner is scheduled for 12/8.  The organizers of the book club will send out an email with details about the next one.

* The teaching team has also agreed to dedicate 20-30 minutes for sharing after the dharma talk each week. We also intend to be more purposeful about how we structure sharing time, with the aim of making it a meaningful opportunity to explore the dharma and build community.

* Volunteers requested!!!  We see a need for two volunteer positions to help build community. The first is someone who can greet newcomers to the sangha, explain how things work, and check in with them after class to see if they have any questions. The second volunteer position would be someone to help manage the FB page. Please let us know if you're interested or available.

* We are currently drafting a mission statement that states our purpose and our values, including those around diversity and inclusion. The intention here is to affirm our shared purpose, and to communicate our values to those who are thinking of joining the community. We also hope that these values become the foundation for wise speech and action, particularly in the areas of diversity and inclusion, so that our sangha is a welcoming community for all. Once the first round of drafting is done, we will solicit suggestions from the sangha as a whole.

* In an effort to improve both communication and a sense of community, Travis is putting more energy into the Facebook page, and we invite those of you who participate in social media to do the same. We see this as an opportunity to reach people who might not know about the sangha, to communicate relevant updates and events, and to allow members to share content and ideas that are wholesome and supportive of our efforts, but not necessarily appropriate content for the listserv.

Accessibility
* We will bring down the folding chairs each week so that sangha members who are not comfortable on the floor can sit.

* We share everyone's concerns about the inaccessibility of the space to individuals with limited mobility. We remain open to suggestions for how to best address this issue.

* We will be arranging the seating in curved rows going forward. This allows more people to fit comfortably in the room, and it makes it easier for individuals with hearing issues to sit closer to the teachers.

Peer Led Classes
* Some of you requested peer led classes and we would like to support this request. In the past, we scheduled specific dates for these, but stopped doing it because nobody volunteered to teach after a while. The teaching team found itself scrambling to find peer teachers and to cover classes when none were available. We would like to try out a new approach where peer-led sittings will occur on an "as requested" basis. If you want to teach a class, write one of the teachers with your topic and some proposed dates. Once a teacher approves the topic we will schedule you in. Some important details: if you lead a class, you are responsible for sending out the Friday email. You are also responsible for finding a sub if you cannot make it. (Sometimes a member of the teaching team can fill in, sometimes we already have other commitments.)

Thank you all for your intention and effort to cultivate such a loving, supportive, and dedicated community. May the fruits of these wholesome efforts bring peace.

Devin

Hi friends,

We will meet this Sunday at Flow from 6:00 - 7:30 PM to meditate, connect, and explore the dharma.

This Sunday, I'll introduce the teaching of the noble eightfold path and give us time to reflect as a group on some elements of this teaching and how it might serve us now.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma Reading Group Sunday 11/17

Hello Sangha members!

First, thanks to Vince for guiding us last night in a metta practice.

I'm emailing you to let you all know that we'll be holding our second Dharma Book club meeting this coming Sunday 11/17 at 4:30pm. The location this week will be my apartment near Logan Circle / U Street. The address is 1909 13th Street. It's half a block from the U St / Cardozo Metro line (Green/Yellow). We'll meet at 4:30 and then walk over to Flow Yoga for the meditation at 6pm.

Here is a link to a Google Doc with the reading for this week. I'm also attaching a PDF version as well. The reading this week is a collection of articles. I put this together thinking about some questions I've been pondering in my own life:
  • What is modern Buddhism?
    • Is it ok to take some of the teachings & ignore others?
    • Can meditation practice ever be truly 'secular'?
  • How do I define my own practice and spirituality?
  • Is there a link between mindfulness & social justice? Where is that link found in the teachings, and how does it manifest in our lives?
Even if you can't make it to the meeting, you're welcome to do some of the reading and send over some thoughts or reflections that I can then share with the group on Sunday.

Those of us that went to the first Book Club meeting last week have started a WhatsApp group to discuss meeting times, logistics, etc. If you'd like to be added to that WhatsApp group, please email me back with your phone number and we'll get you into the group!

Finally, if you're planning on joining, please respond to this email or text me (615-947-5928) and let me know, so that I have a rough headcount. I'll want to get the proper amount of snacks (chips & hummus, crackers, etc.) and make sure everyone is comfortable with the amount of seating. Feel free to bring snacks or goodies if you'd like!

Looking forward to the discussion.

Cheers,
Benjamin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] This Sunday at Flow: Exploring Loving-Kindness (peer-led sangha)

Hi friends,

This Sunday at Flow, we'll be exploring loving-kindness, or metta: the path to cultivating unconditional friendliness towards ourselves and others.

It's a beautiful concept - and also a struggle to put into practice! This makes it a fruitful place for us to direct some attention. We'll start with a guided loving-kindness meditation, then dive into inquiry and discussion together.

As usual, we'll be gathering from 6 to 7:30 pm at Flow Yoga (1450 P St NW).

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Warmly,
Vince

Singing' don't worry about a thing

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Mass Meditation tonight at National Museum of Women in the Arts

Hello Sangha!

I just heard about this event tonight at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It's a Mass Meditation hosted by an organization called The Big Quiet.

"The Big Quiet will take you through a series of breathing exercises, crowd-powered vocal toning, a mass sound meditation, special guest musical performances and break-out conversations to get to know the D.C. community."

Tickets do cost $30, but everyone that attends gets a free meditation pillow plus the proceeds partially go to Kula for Karma, which brings meditation to people affected by trauma. It's from 7:15 - 9:15pm. Tickets are available at the link of the event above.

I'm going to go and would love to see some of you there. Let me know if anyone is interested and we can sit next to each other in the hall!

Cheers,
Benjamin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Dharma reading group 10/27

Hey practitioners,

I mentioned at today's class that a few of us from the Sangha had the idea of trying to start up a monthly reading group that would give us a chance to share and discuss dharma-related books or articles as well as get to know each other a little better outside of the sitting group. Nate & Diane (cc'd) kindly volunteered to host the inaugural meeting next Sunday, 10/27 at 4:30. They live nearby Flow Yoga so we could walk over to class at about 5:45.

I had volunteered to find a group of short readings for our first attempt at this, which I've compiled here. I pulled a few short passages about lovingkindness and processing grief that are meaningful for me. It's less than 10 pages in total.

If you're interested in attending please let me, Diane, and Nate know. We're dealing with some space constraints so I think we have room for only ~8 guests this time around. If we have broader interest (I certainly hope so!) then maybe in future months we can sort out a larger space.

I'll come prepped with a few brief notes but otherwise I am looking forward to discussing and sharing with whoever is interested.

Thanks!

Luke

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sangha Survey

Hi friends,

After the IMCW focus group meeting, Linda and I were inspired to hear from even more people in the Downtown Dharma community. We want to know how this sangha is and is not working for you and we hope that these responses can help the community evolve to better meet our collective needs. Please take a few moments to answer this super duper short survey. All responses are confidential and we look forward to hearing from you!

With love,

Devin
