I just became aware of Brandon Savage's book Mastering Object Oriented PHP (http://masteringobjectorientedphp.com/). Did Brandon self publish? If so, very cool. I wonder who is printing the books.
Recently, I was approached by Packt Publishing, a print on demand publishing company, to write a 300 page book, entitled "Redis High Performance Cookbook." They are offering a 16% royalty, which means that one could expect to earn about $5,000 for writing the book--they expect to sell at least 1,000 copies. My understanding is that The Pragmatic Bookshelp (http://pragprog.com/write-for-us) offers a 50% royalty. Anyway, it strikes me that if you can find a good printer who will print on demand, then self publishing would be the way to go.
