Friends,
-- Our Downtown Dharma sangha has periodically explored what it means to fully embody our practice in a world suffering from many challenges, big and small. For me, our conversations never seem quite long enough to tackle big questions like:
- How does my sitting practice really connect to how I face the big problems of our time?
- Do the Buddha's teachings call for us to act for justice, as other wisdom traditions like Christianity and Judaism do?
- Are there practices that can help me stay connected to these scary issues without burning out and feeling overwhelmed?
Kristin Barker and I, both members of Downtown Dharma, are coordinating an online "EcoSattva Training" with more than 15 wonderful teachers from across many Buddhist traditions to take on these questions through the lens of climate change and other threats to our Earth.
In 2-hour classes over 8 Sundays, you will join a global sangha (currently over 300 and growing) of activists, moms, students, seniors and others from around the world to hear teachings, explore practices individually and in dyads/small groups, and make new friends. Some sanghas around the country are participating as a group; if a few folks are interested, Downtown Dharma could do this as well.
The course begins on Sunday September 13th. You can read the latest about it here; you can see a full description of the course and register here. And please come see me or Kristin tonight or another Sunday for more information.
Thanks for considering this way to deepen your practice and further serve during our important time.
Love,
Lou & Kristin
