[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Opening in Mt. Pleasant Group House Devoted to Meditation/ Spiritual Practice

Opening in Mt. Pleasant Group House Devoted to Meditation/ Spiritual Practice

Not looking for a house, but are interested in our community?

Great!  Please register for updates here: http://goo.gl/forms/34rnVrwhaN

What are we?
Part meditation and yoga community, part group house, and part community center. Four housemates seek a fifth person who is dedicated to deepening their meditation, mindfulness, or spiritual practiceshowever you define this for yourself.

Our new group house is centered around meditation and/or yoga (bhakti, asana, pranayama, etc.), as well as laughter, good food, and hopefully soon, a flourishing garden. Each of us has an ongoing daily practice of some sort, with vipassana meditation and yoga strongly represented. We've come together to deepen our individual practices, which we will do by meditating together regularly, creating a home environment supportive of reflection and contemplation, and by practicing mindful communication with each other.  We will welcome the broader DC community into many of these activities, so that the house may become a space for supporting the practice of others within the wider sangha.

We're just getting started on the community side, and we're starting slowly. We currently host a morning meditation that meets once a week.  Soon we will expand to have group sits multiple times per week, and we'll likely have asana classes, a kirtan and a semi-regular daylong retreat on the weekend (alternating sitting/walking) coming up soon.   We expect to see more and more of this in the future as we build the space and gain a sense of what people might be interested in and how we can offer love to the world.

Who are we?

We are 2 women and 2 men in their 30s. At play, we can be found meditating :-), frolicking in nature, hiking, riding bikes, walking through Mt .P, reading, writing, surfing, critiquing cinema in our home theatre, traveling the world, holding acoustic musical jams, and hosting our friends for dinner.  At work, we can be found doing climate and energy policy, working on renewable energy projects in developing countries, fostering dialogue and capacity building amongst leaders across oceans, and doing social work.

We're a fun loving group. The house is full of laughter, as we all have a taste for the hilarious and absurd.

What's the room like?

The room will be available September 1.  If you needed to move in sooner, however, we may be able to figure something out as we have also have a guest bedroom that we will likely use in the future to host visiting teachers or other friends from the wider dharma and yoga communities outside of DC.

Price is $925/month, utilities not included.  The 3 story townhouse has 3.5 full bathrooms, four working fireplaces, multiple outdoor terraces, a garden with a maple tree, and a two-car garage.  We have set up a "shopkeeper's apartment" on the 2nd and 3rd floors where the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and balcony are. We've dedicated the ground floor of the house to meditation, yoga, and community. Your bedroom is on the 3rd floor, and you would share a full bathroom with one other person.

Who would be a good fit?
We all came to the house with years of our own individual personal practice and a desire to deepen them.  The house grows from that place.  We seek someone who also has an established practice and is interested in deepening their practice in community with others, and in exploring how to integrate practice with daily life in this wild, beautiful, challenging city.

The housemates span the belief spectrum. We imagine a good fit will be with someone else who is grounded in their own existing practice, and has a big-tent philosophical approach.

We are a fun-loving group who don't take our practices or ourselves too seriously, who enjoy raucous laughter, playing music, cooking and sharing food, swapping books and reflecting together on life and learning.  We are also, like most people in DC, busy professionals who balance all of this with demanding work lives.  We imagine you're likely in the same boat, and would enjoy some of the same pursuits.

If you're interested, please let us know a little about you and what about the sound of the house resonates with you.
