Software/Web Development – Remote, but Washington, DC/Baltimore, MD-area preferred – Full Time

What We're Looking For


We are looking for an innovative and creative developer to join a team dedicated to creating open-source web applications that bridge the gap between people like us and government.  We are building a team of people passionate about improving their communities through user-driven, agile, iterative development focusing on the needs of citizens and public servants alike.  We work in a fast-paced, agile, startup environment building scalable, testable and amazing web applications that kick ass and take names.

We're a non-partisan, non-profit development outfit working to open government. That means making it easier for people to access and use as much government information as possible. It's a daunting challenge but one we gladly accept. We believe innovative technology can help deliver a government that listens, works for its citizen-users, and learns from them. We are dedicated to putting better data and better tools in more hands. Our goal is to make or adapt those tools to be easy to use, efficient, scalable and free. Democracy means everyone should have the chance to be a hands-on contributor.


About OpenGov Projects


Required Development Skills

  • Expert knowledge of PHP and experienced in OOP techniques

  • Full LAMP stack experience

  • Extensive experience with modern PHP frameworks ( Laravel )

  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs

  • Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, Javascript/AJAX

  • Working knowledge of git and familiar with Github.com


Communication Abilities & Work Ethic

  • Able to provide direction through leadership

  • Strong willingness to learn and listen

  • Can take direction as well as provide constructive feedback

  • Team oriented but also motivated to lead, learn, and grow

  • Comfortable in an agile, startup work environment

  • Can work efficiently and effectively with little to no supervision or technical guidance

  • Can effectively prioritize and balance project tasks, application improvement, and maintenance / bug fixes
