"Deepening in the Dharma" a new three-month course with Kaira Jewel Lingo

This Spring, IMCW and the Lamont Dharma House will offer an opportunity to deepen in Buddhist practice in community, and interwoven with daily life. The course will include instruction on meditation techniques, including vipassana and metta meditation, as well as reflections on Buddhist ethics, such as generosity, patience, honesty and Right Effort. Teachings will be grounded in the exploration of how we can practically apply the techniques in our daily lives and will involve embodied, creative and interactive practices at times done alone, in pairs and in small groups.

The course will draw from various Buddhist traditions, including the Theravada traditions and the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. This group is not an introduction to meditation and is appropriate for those who have some experience practicing meditation (at least one year).

People of color, LGBTIQ, and differently-abled people are strongly encouraged to apply.

Teacher: The course will be led by Kaira Jewel Lingo, who teaches Buddhist meditation, mindfulness, and compassion internationally, with a focus on activists, people of color, artists, educators, families, and youth. She began practicing mindfulness in 1997. An ordained nun of 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing, she is now a lay Dharma teacher based in Washington, D.C., leading retreats in the U.S. and internationally, and offering mindfulness programs for educators and youth in schools.

Class Format: Classes will begin with a 30 minute sit, and include a teaching/reading, interactive exercises and time for discussion. Every other session will be guided by Kaira Jewel, and the other Tuesdays will be peer-hosted and will build on themes previously introduced by Kaira Jewel. To nurture a strong practice and collective energy, students are encouraged to attend each session.

On the Tuesdays with Kaira Jewel, there will be time for two 15-minute private interviews from 6:45-7:15 p.m. Each participant will have the opportunity to schedule at least one private interview.

Meditation: Participants--especially those who live nearby--will also be welcomed to volunteer to lead one meditation session per week at the Lamont Dharma House (mornings and evenings). This will help support and deepen our daily meditation practice in community.

Registration: In order to reserve your space in the class, please register on the IMCW website here.

Questions: If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us at community@lamontdharma.org.
