The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Senior Web Developer to complete technical analysis, design, programming and maintenance activities to help manage EurekAlert!'s growing technological operation.

As EurekAlert!'s client base continues to expand, ongoing redesign and modernization of the website, on both the front and back end, will be required to keep pace with changes in technology as well as user preferences. The Senior Web Developer manages major upgrade projects, completes system maintenance tasks, and develops, tests, and implements new features in response to client needs -- from journal portals to interactive science games for younger visitors, as assigned. The Senior Web Developer works under the supervision of the EurekAlert! Director, but takes the initiative to independently and continuously check for problems to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the entire EurekAlert! website. Finally, the Senior Web Developer brings both technical knowledge and a high-level of interpersonal and communication skills to bear by serving as the primary backup for the EurekAlert! Director, as needed, in meetings with vendors, AAAS Information Technology colleagues, the Office of Public Programs (OPP) Director and other senior managers.

Major duties and responsibilities:

* Manages major and minor technical projects, including site updates, changes, and bug fixes, all of which may include complex requirements; collaborates with colleagues and supervisors to establish project requirements; plans and implements programming work; deploys and troubleshoots 
* Provides support for existing EurekAlert! technical operations, including modifications to production web applications, and proactively troubleshooting site and web server issues Independently provides needed technical assistance and support to EurekAlert! staff and clients, working with them to determine the best solutions to meet user technical needs; takes a leadership role in the design and implementation of those solutions 
* Diagnoses problems and takes remedial action or implements procedural changes before problems reach a critical threshold 
Evaluates, tests, implements and modifies site systems and applications; completes regular site updates Serves as a liaison with the AAAS Information Technology department as the EurekAlert! webhost 
* Recommends software purchases and testing applications in order to assess usefulness and appropriateness Provides essential backup for the EurekAlert! Director in meetings with vendors, the IT Department, the OPP Director and others 

Minimum requirements:

* Extensive university or college level training leading to a Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field 
* Three to five years experience with PHP, Perl, MySQL, HTML, Javascript/DOM required 
* Ability to work in UNIX/Linux environments required 
* General knowledge of web server development, especially with Apache, required 
* Experience writing, debugging, and troubleshooting computer programs using PHP, Perl, or another structured programming language 
* Experience with Python, XML, Photoshop 
* Experience working with audio and video files preferred 
* Ability to identify and resolve software problems quickly
