Title: Software Developer Tech Lead - Alexandria, VA

$100-$120K


Job description: The Software Developer/Technical Lead supports the Production team within the company. This individual will lead the technology effort to provide creative, scalable solutions to support Production's goals of releasing high-quality, enhanced content quickly to customers. This individual will work with end users to define requirements, identify creative automated solutions for historically manual low-value added work, complete associated design specifications (including wire frames), and deliver a high-quality software solution. This individual will hold him/herself and the team accountable for following best practices associated with the key steps in test-driven software development: design, code, unit test and release. The solutions will be used to support the management and enhancement of high-volumes of content (including audio, video, and textual material) through to release in product.

Skills Required
• Experience automating workflows
• Experience with computational text analysis to support computer-aided or suggested indexing
• Experience running small teams using agile programming techniques
• Ability to scope large projects and calculate estimated delivery given varying resource allocation options
• Experience communicating pros and cons of alternative solutions to project stakeholders; avoiding unnecessary complexity; suggesting creative, breakthrough approaches
• Ability to learn, diagnose and implement features and bug fixes in large, multi-tiered information retrieval systems
• Ability to coordinate with other tech leads working on related deliverables
• Experience with coding patterns and evangelist of best practices
• Skills with debugging techniques and ability to find root causes of mysterious problems
• Experience with the front-end, middle-ware and back-end tiers of our platforms
• Ability to solve difficult problems
• Able to produce highly usable systems that are high performance, easy to maintain and engineered to meet business needs
• Experience with choosing technologies and adopting strategic architectures
• Ability to mentor more junior staff
• Ability to communicate ideas and develop strategy through presentations, demonstrations and specifications
Technology Knowledge Requirements
• 7+ years of experience object oriented PHP
• Deep technical understanding of systems, databases, networking, and computing environments
• 5+ years of experience XML, XSLT, DTDs, schemas, and related technologies
• 5+ years of experience with SQL and MySQL tools and query tuning
• Experience with DBMS schema modeling
• Javascript / JQuery and other javascript frameworks
• Drupal or other CMS platforms
• Application architectures (Web, Mobile, SaaS)
• REST APIs
• Experience with JIRA, Target Process or other agile project tracking systems
• IDEs and XDebug or equivalent
• Code quality metrics using tools like Sonar

Desirable skills and experience:
• Digital library construction and use cases
• Library standards: SRU, Dublin Core, Z39.50, MARC, OAI-PMH, SUSHI, etc.
• Library systems knowledge: discovery systems, OPACs, LibGuides, resolvers, proxies.
• Information architecture and applications
• eCommerce technologies

Educational Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
• Equivalent education in the form of work experience at similar technology positions.
• Willingness to participate in on-going training and skills development
