[dcphp-dev] Hacking Against Domestic Violence

Hello everyone! Sandy invited me to share a note with the group about a project I am working on in DC.

On January 26th and 27th I'm helping organize a hackathon to build solutions addressing issues in domestic violence. We're doing this effort in collaboration with six countries in Central America (though the DC event isn't focused on Latin America). You can find out more about the effort here: http://www.vdhackathon.org/

I'm looking for developers in the DC area who would be interested in joining this effort. The exciting thing about it is that we've been doing a ton of work on defining strong problems so that the work we do that weekend will directly impact organizations and individuals that work on domestic violence. Some of these problems are also particularly relevant for PHP developers. For example, one problem is to create a niche job search platform that allows businesses to connect with service providers to survivors of domestic violence and offer jobs to that community.

If you're interested I'd strongly encourage you to:
  1. Sign up for the DC event on Jan 26/27! http://www.eventbrite.com/event/4680815445
  2. Help spread the word! You can use this blog post from one of our collaborators as part of a call for action on mailing lists or to friends: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/hacking-against-domestic-violence
I would love to hear from anyone who has questions or would like to help support the project in any other way. We have a lot of work ahead of us until the event to make sure we are setting ourselves up for successfully building projects that will affect domestic violence.

Thanks for your time!
