[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Understanding Dukkha - Lion's Roar Nov 14

Greeting Sangha Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Very thankful for Downtown Dharma Sangah and all of ye!

Writing to share a recent piece from Lion's Roar that I thought you may find of interest: Understanding Dukkha
"Konin Cardenas, Mark Unno, Thubten Chodron, and Bhikkhu Bodhi examine what dukkha is, why it matters, and how we can approach it in our lives"  https://www.lionsroar.com/forum-understanding-dukkha/

There is very good dialogue and teachings from each of the participants. I found particularly meaningful and useful Bhikkhu Bodhi's description of the various dimensions of dukkha and the benefit of developing insight into the 3 marks of existence 1) impermanence 2) unsatisfactoriness 3) selflessness.  In addition, his advise about dealing with bodily or emotional pain/distress from the position of nonidentification and then probing more deeply into the origins (some kind of grasping), was very instructive.  "Instead of taking the feeling to be "mine", thereby intensifying them and seeking escape from them by indulging in sensual pleasures, one can focus attention on the feelings and watching them as momentary states that arise, stay/stand for sometime and then pass away."  The approach / position of selflessness-nonidentified observation really resonated with me.  I have been trying it out and feel it has been quite helpful, so wanted to share.

Hope this note finds you well.

Warm regards,
Nancy
