Hi all,
I hope this finds you well! Just wanted to let you know about an afternoon workshop on masculinities, health and justice that I'll be facilitating this Sunday, July 9, from 2-5 PM.
The FB event page is here, and the description is below. It will be a meaningful afternoon of connecting, learning, and reflection, and folks of all genders are welcome. Please feel free to ping me with any questions, and I hope to see some of you there!
Warmly,
Josie
Men's Story Project Workshop - Sunday, July 9
How are boys taught to be "men," and what are the effects of this training?
How can rigid notions of masculinity be unlearned?
How do men's intersecting identities (e.g., gender, race) contribute to shaping their life experience?
How can men become allies and actors for social justice, and how can people of all genders support men in this process?
These are some of the questions we'll explore in this workshop! Here's some background:
Dr. Josie Lehrer started the Men's Story Project (MSP) in 2008 in San Francisco to help bring critical dialogue on masculinities, health and justice into public forums far and wide. As a movement-building project, the MSP helps "crowdsource culture change" in social ideas about masculinity, in locally-led ways, through men's less-often-heard voices and stories.
In each MSP production, boys, men and folks who identify in any way with maleness share personal stories with live audiences on topics such as relationships; violence against women and other men; sexuality; gender identity; homo/transphobia; bullying; HIV/AIDS; personal transformations; sources of joy in their life; and intersections with factors such as race/ethnicity and religion. The MSP has been overwhelmingly positively received (university awards, CNN coverage, Amnesty International sponsorship) and is spreading on U.S. college campuses.
In this workshop, we'll use powerful film clips of MSP presenters' stories as starting points for discussion on masculinities in relation to diverse social challenges and paths of personal reflection and change. Personal sharing will be encouraged though it's not necessary. This is intended as a progressive, safe space for folks of all backgrounds.
Josie holds a doctorate in public health from Harvard and has served as an educator, advisor and facilitator in many contexts, including facilitating HIV support groups for LGBT youth and adult women, working as a community educator with San Francisco Women Against Rape, and serving as a Senior Gender Advisor with USAID.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop! People of all genders are welcome.
