[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Group in Brookland/NE?

Hi all,

I've been to the Sunday night group at Church of the Holy City a couple times, but recently moved from Mt Pleasant to a neighborhood called Langdon (just south of Brookland, near 14th and Rhode Island NE). Does anyone on this list know of a sitting group that's more conveniently located to that area?

Thanks!

MOLC Honors Six Workforce Development Graduates

MOLC Fall 2014 Workforce Development/Life Skills program participants were recently honored  at a graduation ceremony that attracted friends, family, public officials and others in the community.

In partnership with Giant Food, MOLC's Workforce Development/Life Skills program uses an evidence-based curriculum to provide employment training for unemployed and/or hard-to-place individuals. Training includes career planning, interpersonal relations, customer service, basic work skills, resume and job application preparation interview preparation and life skills. Eighty-five percent of program participants get a job at Giant Food upon graduating.

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) expressed his appreciation for the MOLC and the graduates, stating, "You will now be able to take advantage of the great opportunities this country has to offer. You did it for yourself, but also for your community."  Cardin said that Maryland's federal delegation understands that "we need to have in our communities the tools necessary to reach out and help other people." Cardin said, "In our graduates today, we have people who are going to make a difference."

Maryland Senator Ulysses Currie said that  program participants made "remarkable progress" and encouraged them to contact him regarding post-secondary education opportunities.

Nichelle D. Schoultz, special assistant to U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) said that the senator is "working to make sure that programs like this continue to exist. When one person in our community is helped, we're all helped."

Peter Goodson, re-entry coordinator with Prince George's County's One-Stop Center, said that he is excited to see what program participants have accomplished. "I know you will make an impact on the family, community and the nation."

Kenneth Maxwell Jr., an MOLC program graduate, reflected on his experience:

My name is Kenneth Maxwell Jr. and today I can tell you my name with a new light in my eyes and heart. Today I have a new pride in myself that I didn't have before. I never believed I was a horrible person. I just had a belief that of the world owed me something because I didn't ask to be here.

But coming into the Mission Of Love Charities' Life Skills Program changed everything. One of the best things that stuck with me was our lesson early on in the class about the power of thought. Right thinking begins with the words we say to ourselves, so today I am no longer Inmate Number 296–069. I am no longer feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for all your encouragement, support and love.

Fall  2014 graduates are as follows:

  • Stephanie Coates
  • Kenneth Maxwell
  • Tonya Moore
  • Rhonda Mousseyandi
  • Tawanna Thompson
  • Nina Pope

In addition to receiving certificates from MOLC, all graduates received certificates from Senator Cardin and Senator Mikulski.

I've heard the suggestion that you could use Laravel Route Filters to cache the responses,
but I can't quite get my head around the idea.

Thoughts?  References?  Examples?

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Next Buddha Brunch - April 4

Hi Sangha Members,

Saturday, April 4, 12pm

I'd like to take another shot at hosting Buddha Brunch, since we got snowed and iced out last time!  Fingers crossed that we'll be plenty out of the woods by April.  I am in NW DC, near the Takoma metro station.  If you would like to join us, please let me know -- I will send out follow up details next week.  As always, please bring a dish to share with the group.

For this brunch, I thought we could talk about the ways we set or stay attentive towards our mindfulness intentions in daily life with all its distractions, whatever our respective intentions may be.  I don't have a reading to accompany this topic, but then again, I'm not sure we need one.

Hope to see you!

take care,
Becky

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Film Premiere Next Saturday March 28!

Dear friends,

Next Saturday March 28th, the DC Environmental Film Festival will host the East Coast premiere of a wonderful new film called Planetary. The film speaks to the interconnection of all beings and our connection with the Earth as a source of belonging and resilience in our times of great change.

The movie showcases many Buddhist teachers, including HH the 16th Karmapa, Joanna Macy, Joan Halifax, David Loy and others.  Following the film, there will be a party and multimedia experience to celebrate Earth Hour, a mobilization happening all over the world that evening to raise climate awareness. There will be food, refreshments and a chance to meet the filmmakers and some of the teachers.

The event is co-sponsored by WWF (which created Earth Hour) as well as by One Earth Sangha which is working with the filmmakers to promote the movie among the western Buddhist community.

You can watch the trailer, learn more and reserve tickets here: https://www.dcenvironmentalfilmfest.org/film/planetary/

I hope you can join us on Saturday!

Lou

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Volunteering for the Anacostia Watershed Society Cleanup- April 25

Dear sangha members,

Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help with the Anacostia Watershed Society Cleanup on April 25.  I'm in touch with a very enthusiastic and seemingly well-organized site leader who is helping coordinate the Dueling Creek site clean up in Colmar Manor, MD.   Here are some of the relevant details:
Location and time: The meeting spot will be at the Colmar Manor Town Hall at approximately 9 am, April 25. The clean up is scheduled from 9 am-noon. (There are two groups meeting at the town hall. We'll be doing the Dueling Creek Clean up, which is led by Fran Toler.) There is a celebratory picnic from noon - 2pm at the Bladensburg Waterfront park if you'd like to do that, too.
Transport: There are several people who are interested who have cars and can offer rides. It is also possible to get to the City Hall by public transit. From the Dupont area, you would take the red line to the Rhode Island Ave. Station and then the T18 bus to 38th and Bladensburg Road. But based on the number of people with cars who offered to carpool, I don't think it will be necessary for any one to attempt to use a new public transit route early on a Saturday morning.
