[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Cultivating True Love class and other events with Kaira Jewel this fall

Dear friends, I hope you are each well and happy.

I wanted to let you know that after living nearly 3 years in DC I am moving to Sri Lanka at the end of October. It has been a wonderful time in DC and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have practiced the Dharma with you.

I will be teaching a number of classes and events this fall that I wanted to let you know about. You are welcome to forward to those who may be interested.

In addition to continuing with the Monday night drop-in classes at Seekers Church from 7-8:30pm, I will be offering the Cultivating True Love: Mindfulness and Relationships for a second year, meeting 6 times on Wednesdays from 7-9pm and twice on a Sunday from 4-6pm. Class begins Wednesday, Sept 19. More info here.

MODULE ONE  

Loving Kindness

"Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone; it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new." – Ursula K. Le Guin.

We do not awaken outside of our relationships to others.

It is through relating to others that we realize the deepest truths about ourselves.  

The path of opening the heart to ourselves and others is the path of developing:  

Loving kindness, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity, Inclusiveness.  


MODULE TWO  

Compassion

"If we have compassion in our hearts, every thought, word and action can generate a miracle" –Thich Nhat Hanh  

We have the tendency to shrink from what is painful, including our own suffering and discomfort.  

This doesn't actually alleviate our pain.  

Compassion, the willingness to be with suffering with kindness, is what gives us the capacity to relieve it.  

It is an essential part of true love.  


MODULE THREE  

Joy   

"Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy" – Thich Nhat Hanh  

We can each do something every day to bring joy to ourselves and others.  

This is a key element of true love. With mindfulness we see that while there is much suffering in us and around us that needs our attention, there is also much to celebrate and be grateful for.  

We can deepen our capacity to see the good in life to bring more joy to ourselves and others.  


MODULE FOUR  

Equanimity and Inclusiveness

While this fourth practice of true love is often translated as equanimity, Thich Nhat Hanh also translates it as inclusiveness, which adds a more active interpretation of how to apply it.  

This element of true love is powerful in our personal lives helping us ride the waves of fortune and misfortune.  

It is also an antidote to discrimination, dogmatism and intolerance, which is increasingly breaking down our social fabric.  

It helps us to stay open so we can overcome barriers and biases. Encouraging us to reach out to those who are different from us to heal our separation.


Course Details

Eight Recorded Teachings

Filmed in high definition with teachings and experiential exercises to help you bring the practices into your daily life. Released each Tuesday and Friday during the course, these teachings can be watched at your own pace throughout the week. Each recorded teaching is roughly 30 minutes.  

Four Guided Meditations

Each module includes a guided meditation to support you in experiencing the week's teaching directly and deeply in your own practice.

Four Live Sessions of 60 minutes

This is your chance to connect with Kaira Jewel live, ask questions, clarify your understanding and share what's coming up for you in the course. Ask your questions on screen using your webcam, or via text. The power of being included and heard can offer great benefit in your process.

Kaira Jewel teaches meditation and mindfulness internationally, with a focus on activists, people of color, artists, educators, families, and youth. She began practicing mindfulness in 1997.
