Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Question about march next weekend

I will be at a Reiki training on Sunday & will invite the gathering to send Reiki to all demonstrators & beings in the DMV & USA.

I invite meditation practitioners & healers to dedicate our practices today & every day (especially this weekend) to healing the trauma of the birth of this most prosperous & powerful nation, built upon the genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans in America, and the persistent abuse of People of Color due to systemic racism.

We are one human family. Sending Light, Love & Peace!

Thanks to both of you for your thoughtful replies and for the information.  I"m afraid I"m not willing to risk my safety for this one, though I certainly respect your right (or anyone else's) to do so.  I know this is different, but the day after the inauguration, I was part of a Buddhist group marching in silence, and it was very powerful.

metta to all,
Joan

Hi Joan,

I went to a community meeting last night about this (which is why I missed meditation at Potter's House!). There will be a rally at Freedom Plaza 12 - 3 pm on August 12, which is legally permitted, explicitly non-violent, joy-based, and centers the work of POC and other marginalized organizers. I will be there and would be happy to meet up with folks - it will be as safe as possible, but always good to be in a group.

If you would like to serve as a de-escalator at this event to help ensure its peace, they are still in need of volunteers. Not exactly sure how to get in touch with them, but you might try commenting on the Facebook event.

Other opportunities include a Aug 10 Free School and donating -- the event is still in need of some basic and vital support like covering costs of portable toilets for the crowds, water bottles, materials to create a large art installation, etc. Please give generously if you can.

I understand where you're coming from on seeking peaceful protest opportunities - but I think this is a good topic to wrestle with and consider deeply. St. Paul's Principles call us to respect a diversity of tactics and to affirm the unity of the movement for justice. Groups will be in the streets that weekend with more disruptive and defensive approaches - and there is a long lineage (particularly of marginalized organizers) using such direct action to bring about substantial change. I am meditating on the thought this week that we must risk something real, including our safety, especially as folks of privilege, for our shared liberation. Happy to talk more.

Grateful for you,
Rachel

Does anyone know of a peaceful counter-march to the March for the Right next Sunday, Aug. 12?

Also, someone recently mentioned the Downtown Dharma FB group.  Here's the link - https://www.facebook.com/groups/52345512357/about/

I'm not clear which topics are appropriate for this listserv and which for FB.  Can someone who knows clarify this?

thanks,
Joan
