php[world]'s advanced ticket sale will be ending soon on October 6th. On sale at $575 vs $795 full price. Or wait, and pay the conference more money -- I am sure they would appreciate it and your employer might not miss the money :) https://world.phparch.com/register/

We will be having a DC Area Developers session which will be a mini meetup and panel discussion about PHP in the DC Area. If you are hiring or looking to be hired this will be a great session to attend. There will quite a few local speakers and attendees. It will be a great networking opportunity and hopefully an opportunity to recharge the PHP community in the DC area. https://world.phparch.com/sessions/3535/

php[world] and Twilio have partnered to provide 10 free tickets to underrepresented groups at conferences. YOU HAVE 5 DAYS to submit your application here: https://world.phparch.com/diversity/. Otherwise, please take a minute to thank Twilio and php[world].

I hope to see you all at a great conference in November!!!

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday @ The Potter's House

Dear Friends,

We will meet this Sunday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Community Room of the Potter's House (1658 Columbia Rd, NW) to meditate and further explore the five aggregates. The space is wheelchair accessible.

Our focus will be on the third of the five aggregates, perception or samjna in Pali. This teaching can be thought of as a conceptual map to help us better understand rather than be confused by the activities of the mind which can so often lead to unnecessary suffering.

I look forward to exploring this topic with you on Sunday!

With love,
Linda

[Downtown Dharma Listserve]

Hi friends,

Two quick items related to last night's talk.

1. Eva asked if I had any more readings on shame. There are some very highly regarded works on shame in the western tradition (e.g. Brene Brown), but I thought it might be helpful to offer some teachings from the Buddhist perspective. As a start, here's a talk from Anushka Fernandopulle about hiri and ottapa.

2. Last night, I inaccurately described the difference between hiri and ottapa. It is not, as I stated, backward looking vs. forward looking, but rather inner vs. outer. Hiri is the inner feeling of remorse for behaviors that do not align with our ethical principals while ottapa is the fear of external consequences - how our behaviors will impact others and the consequences that might follow.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Sunday @ The Potter's House

Hi friends,

We will meet this Sunday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Community Room at the Potters House Cafe, located at 1658 Columbia Rd. NW. The space is wheelchair accessible.

This week we will be looking at the second of the five aggregates, called vedena (english = feeling tone or sensation). You may remember vedena from other classic lists, like the four foundations of mindfulness, though we will be taking a slightly different approach than we did when we discussed it over the summer. Most of the time the experience of vedena goes unnoticed, but the teachings suggest that by bringing a conscious attention to it we can interrupt the pattern that perpetuates suffering.

(Also, as promised, we will delve a little into Ryland's question about where anger against injustice fits into Buddhist teachings.)

Looking forward to seeing you Sunday!

With love,
Devin
