[Downtown Dharma Listserve]

Hi friends,

Two quick items related to last night's talk.

1. Eva asked if I had any more readings on shame. There are some very highly regarded works on shame in the western tradition (e.g. Brene Brown), but I thought it might be helpful to offer some teachings from the Buddhist perspective. As a start, here's a talk from Anushka Fernandopulle about hiri and ottapa.

2. Last night, I inaccurately described the difference between hiri and ottapa. It is not, as I stated, backward looking vs. forward looking, but rather inner vs. outer. Hiri is the inner feeling of remorse for behaviors that do not align with our ethical principals while ottapa is the fear of external consequences - how our behaviors will impact others and the consequences that might follow.

With love,

Devin
