[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Coming up! Book club June 8 - Lama Rod Owens, "The New Saints"

Hi friends,

A reminder that our potluck + book club, focused on Lama Rod Owens' The New Saints and kindly hosted by Vince and Nick, is coming up next Saturday, June 8 at 6pm.

There are still a handful of spots available ... please RSVP to join us

For those who plan to attend, Vince and I have made some selections to narrow the focus of our discussion together:
--the chapter called "The New Saint: An Introduction"
--the chapter on "Awakened Care."

If you don't get to all the reading, or barely get to it at all!, you are still welcome to join us.

If you'd like to get a flavor via audio, Lama Rod was recently hosted for a Tricycle Talks podcast episode.

With love,
Dechen / Ellen + Vince

Hi friends,

Mark your calendars: our next reading group discussion + potluck will be Saturday, June 8 at 6pm. Nick and I will host at our home in Mt. Pleasant. Dechen Ellen McSweeney has generously offered to facilitate.

Together we'll be discussing Lama Rod Owens' new book, The New Saints: From Broken Hearts to Spiritual Warriors. (I've copy-pasted a description below.)

You can RSVP here:

We haven't read this yet, so haven't picked which chapters to focus on yet! We'll follow up soon with more specific guidance. Just wanted to give a heads up, in case you're looking for a new dharma book in the meantime.

Warmly,
Vince

Book Description:

Saints, spiritual warriors, bodhisattvas, tzaddikim—no matter how they are named in a given tradition, they all share a profound wish to free others from suffering. Saints are not unattainable beings of stained glass or carved stone. "Saints are ordinary and human, doing things any person can learn to do," teaches Lama Rod Owens. "Our era calls for saints who are from this time and place, speak the language of this moment, and integrate both social and spiritual liberation. I believe we all can and must become New Saints."

With The New Saints, Lama Rod shares a guidebook for becoming an effective agent of justice, peace, and change. Combining personal stories, traditional teachings, and instructions for contemplative and somatic practices, he shares inspiring resources for self-exploration and wise action.
