Happy Holidays from Mission of Love Charities ❤️

A Holiday Message from the

Mission of Love Charities CEO

Dear Colleague and Supporter of Mission of Love Charities:

In this holiday season of our 30th year, the Mission of Love Charities continues in its commitment to serve the most vulnerable people of the community. Our mission has always been to serve homeless and low-income families and individuals, but with the severe impact of the COVID pandemic, the number of people who rely on the Mission for assistance with food, rent, utilities, health and other basic needs has increased tenfold. Indeed, most months more than a 1,000 people have received food, housing, referral assistance at the Mission.

One of the most pressing issues facing our clients is food insecurity and Mission of Love Charities seeks to provide those affected with food and supplies that will help them during this difficult time. Additionally, many are faced with the possibility of eviction and homelessness because they do not have money to pay the rent or the utilities.  With the help of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funds from the federal and state governments, we have been able to help nearly 1,000 families and individuals over the last year, who didn’t have the money to pay the rent, remain in their homes.

A strategic priority for the future of Mission of Love Charities is developing its Workforce Development, Education and Job Training Program. Many of our clients who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic may not ever get their jobs back and providing them with the training to get back on their feet economically is perhaps the best long-term solution to their situation.

Our Workforce Development program provides specific job training to become a Certified Nurse Assistant or Geriatric Nurse Assistant, a Meetings Planner, or an OSHA Construction Inspector as well as enhancing skillsets for basic computer skills, financial literacy, oral and written communication, professional goal setting and how to dress for success. We are also excited to announce the launch of the Cisco Networking Academy in early 2022. This program will focus on teaching coding skills to returning citizens between the ages of 18-27.

The need from the community is great and the demand for these training programs is high—most generate long waiting lists as soon as they are announced. As our robust enrollment can attest, the Mission of Love Charities workforce development programs are popular with our clients and have a positive reputation with area companies. As most, if not all, of the graduates of these programs have gone on to secure full-time and part-time jobs in their new field.

While all of these programs and services continue to contribute to the Mission, a major goal to raise the funds needed to renovate, rebuild and repurpose the abandoned school building across the street from our current facility. This building is the former Lyndon Hill Elementary School, which the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County has leased to the Mission for $1/year. The multi-million dollar renovation of the building is projected to start in 2022.

The new building promises to provide larger, improved and better equipped space that can accommodate several new and expanded programs that serve the needs of homeless and low-income community. Raising money and finding the financial resources to support the completion of the new building is central to the operations of the Mission.

We look to our friends, stakeholders and past and prospective donors to help us with this effort.

Think about the vital, important work of the Mission of Love Charities this holiday season when you sit down to write your year-end donations. We ask that you be as generous as possible. And we promise that your contribution will be applied with the utmost care and scrupulous attention to responsible financial management. The return on your investment will be something we can all be proud of.

Thanks to all of you for your support.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez
