Friends,

We will have our weekly gathering this Sunday from 6:00 - 7:30 and I'll be filling in for Kristin this week. The link for the meeting is below.

The topic will be dukkha, roughly translated as suffering, and it's function as an inescapable, flummoxing, tortuous, and absolutely essential part of our spiritual growth. At times, we might think of dukkha as a mess that we have stepped in, but the more clearly we see the more we realize that we're actually swimming in it and always have been.

On a national level, the ills of our nation run much deeper than anything that can be solved in an election cycle - or 10. Those who have looked back across the centuries with a clear eye often remind us of this. Rebecca Solnit, a historian and wise being, writes, "History is like weather, not like checkers…A game of checkers ends. The weather never does."

With this realization comes a powerful understanding that points the way toward our liberation. When we come into presence, we directly contact the pain of reality and we see how greed, hatred, and delusion are endlessing roaring across the globe and through our own hearts. Fortunately for us, this pain has power to break "the shell that encloses [our] understanding" as Gibran writes. It tears away the flimsy and endlessly seductive dream of a safe, secure, and pleasurable existence, making us ripe for peace, kindness, and freedom.

I look forward to sitting together this weekend.

With love,

Devin
