[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Teaching from the Heart: Oct 28 Daylong for Educators in Takoma Park

Dear friends, I hope you are each well and feeling fulfilled.
I am writing to ask for your help in getting the word out about the below Oct 28th daylong for educators. Could you forward the email below to your networks and teachers you know who may be interested? (A flyer is coming soon which I'm happy to forward you in early Sept). And perhaps parents you work with who might want to share with the teachers of their kids? I'd be grateful for any ideas you have for how to help get the word out about this to families and teachers.

(I'm offline for the next few weeks as I'm teaching on a wilderness retreat in California. Will be back online in early Sept and can answer any questions or be in touch then.) Thanks! Kaira Jewel

Teaching from the Heart:

A Day of Mindfulness for Educators

October 28, 2017, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

at Seekers Church, (276 Carroll Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20012)

In this daylong for educators we will learn and practice tools for taking good care of ourselves, so that we can be truly present for those we teach, and bring the best of ourselves into the classroom. We will slow down and come home to our body and breath by practicing mindful sitting, walking and eating silently together, as well as deep relaxation, a mindfulness talk, and group discussion. We will possibly use the tools of InterPlay—improvisational movement and storytelling—to access the wisdom of the body, and touch our inherent grace and ease.

"The unwritten curriculum in the classroom is the teacher's presence."

Meena Srinivasan, author of Teach, Breathe, Learn

We can't transmit mindfulness in our work as educators if we don't embody it ourselves. Therefore the focus of our day will be on nourishing ourselves as educators, yet we will also explore secular mindfulness practices and exercises we can share with our students.

The focus of the day is on secular applications of mindfulness and is therefore appropriate for educators of all faith traditions or none.

Whether you are a teacher, school counselor, administrator, or simply have an interest in mindfulness in education—all are welcome.

Please bring a packed lunch with you.
