[dcphp-dev] New Meetup Group

For those of you in far Western Maryland, Virginia, or even in West Virginia itself, there's a new meetup group run by next month's speaker, Brandon Mueller:

It's not PHP-only, but for those who find it a long hard drive in to DC, this may be a good alternative.

[dcphp-dev] Web + PHP Security course in Tyson's

Hi folks,

I wanted to share what we, php[architect], are offering a live, 1-day
course on Web & PHP Security. The course will be taught at the Tyson's
Sheraton by our very own Eli White on February 11th. This course was
very popular at php[world], so if you need to brush up on application
security, or know someone who does, please take a look and pass it on!

The early bird sale ends this Friday. You can read more about it and get
your tickets on our site:

Thanks,

Oscar M.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Buddha Brunch, Sat Jan 17, and farewell (temporarily!)

Dear sangha friends,

Hope your new year is off to a good start!  I'm planning to host the next Buddha Brunch at my place in Adams Morgan, next Saturday, January 17, from 12:00-2:30pm. If you'd like to join, please RSVP to me (danya.greenfield@gmail.com, not the entire listserve), and I'll send the exact directions and address. I can accommodate about 10 people. I'd like to discuss discernment and the pursuit of  happiness, based on Ajahn Geoff's guide on Discernment, p 4-12, http://www.dhammatalks.org/Archive/Writings/Discernment_v140930.pdf.  (It's a really long document - don't print the whole thing).

I also wanted to share some exciting changes on my end - I recently left my job and will be going overseas for the next six months in India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.  I depart February 8 and will back in Washington in September.  I'm very excited about this next stage - in addition to a spiritual journey, my trip will also be a creative exploration of my non-work-related passions (photography, travel writing, cooking), and to pursue something I've wanted to do for a long time.  If anyone has suggestions of places to do meditation retreats or study in any of these countries, I would be very grateful, and I'm still putting together my plan so travel recommendations are also very welcome!

In terms of the sangha, Rebecca Ratner has volunteered to maintain this listserve (rkratner@yahoo.com) and Becky Lipsitz (lipsitzr@gmail.com) volunteered to coordinate the buddha brunches, so contact her if you'd like to host in the future.  I'll be at sangha the next couple Sundays, so hope to see many you before I depart.  Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement.

Namaste,
Danya

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Volunteer in 2015

Thanks for the volunteer suggestions. They all sound like great ideas. I'll do some research this weekend.

I'm also interested in coordinating a group to volunteer with the Anacostia Watershed Society's Earth Day river clean-up on April 25, 9-12 am.  If folks are interested in participating, go ahead and mark your calendars now.  I'll send out more information later.

Happy New Year to all,  Amy

Hi All,

I hope everyone is off to a great New Year!

I'd like to thank everyone from the Downtown Dharma listserv who came out to our latest volunteer day with St. Stephen's Loaves and Fishes and those of you who showed up a few Fridays ago in the cold to hold candles on 16th Street to sustain the dialogue about the excessive use of force in African American communities.

In looking forward to the New Year, it's been suggested that we consider other volunteer opportunities. So I'd like to see if people have ideas or suggestions for where we might volunteer. One place I will look into is Hands On Dc, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that organizes projects to improve the physical condition of Washington, DC public schools.

I'll try to identify a couple of places in the next few weeks and get feedback from those of you who might be interested in participating.

Namaste,
Scott
