[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma this Saturday at 11:00 am in the Lovely Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

Dear beloved sangha,

Immersement in nature brings us the interconnectedness that helps calms, centers, and heals. In the DMV there is no lovelier place for experiencing nature than the Kenilworth Gardens!

This Saturday August 30 at 11:00 am, the Downtown Dharma community will be gathering at Kenilworth Gardens for a silent meditation, a short talk on the Zen perspective on the interconnectedness of all beings, and a mindful walk amidst the lovely gardens. The weather will be beautiful!

Please bring your own mat, and footwear that you don't mind getting a bit wet. We will meet in the picnic grounds to the right after the entrance.

Come join us!

With appreciation,

Mark

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Great news! - Re: Downtown Dharma Haiku Collection - Reserve your copy & raise money for a local food bank!

Hi all!

Sorry for the double email, but I have great news to share about the haiku collection fundraiser. A generous anonymous donor has very graciously offered to match our charity proceeds up to $500! That would mean raising at least $1000 total to fight hunger with Capital Area Food Bank! So far we have $222 in pledges, so we are well on our way!!

RESERVE YOUR COPY HERE: A Walk With Others Reservation Form

Thank you all so much for your consideration and support of this project!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the launch on Sunday and purchased a book! So far, your generous donations have covered the $265 production cost and raised $162 in proceeds for Capital Area Food Bank.

If you would like to reserve one of the remaining 47 unclaimed copies, please complete this quick reservation form!

(If you already reserved as a contributor and have not yet paid, don't worry! I still have your copy, and you don't need to submit a reservation form.)

I'm excited to announce that we will be co-hosting our summer haiku event with Temperance Alley Garden, where we will debut our community-led haiku collection, A Walk with Others: Haiku by Downtown Dharma & Friends

Printed copies of the collection will be available for a $10 donation. All proceeds go to Capital Area Food Bank. Can't wait? Check out the digital edition here.

I hope to see you there!

What: Using the garden as inspiration, participants will receive a brief lesson on how to write haiku and then practice writing and sharing haiku with each other. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment.)

When: Sunday, August 24, 4-6pm

Where: Temperance Alley Garden (in the alley behind 1909 13th St NW) has been kind enough to let us use their beautiful space. The garden is a 5-minute walk from Yoga District on 14th St, so those attending our regular Downtown Dharma sit that evening should have no trouble making both events. The garden is relatively small and flat with grass lawns and some narrow pathways. If you have accessibility questions, please let me know! See the Temperance Alley Garden event page.

Who: This event is free and open to the community! You are welcome to RSVP via Partiful to help us estimate our guest count. No excessive walking/hiking required for this event, and chairs are available.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku, and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring a pen and a notebook/paper. Light refreshments will be available, but any non-alcoholic beverages and/or snacks you would like to share will be much appreciated!

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Cultivating a Compassionate Heart. Sunday, August 24

Dear Friends,

It was a true blessing to be with you all last Sunday. I so appreciated your vulnerability, engagement, and receptiveness.

I wanted to take the opportunity to follow up by re-sharing a few of the quotes that seemed to resonate with folks:

"A tiny bubble of laughter, I have become the see of mirth itself" - Parmahansa Yogananda

"Wisdom knows that I am nothing. Love knows that I am everything. And between these two my life flows" - Nisgardatta Maharaj

"We are all just walking each other home" - Ramdas

If you would like to continue practicing with me, you can look for me on the schedule at DC Bouldering Project, Luneh Yoga, and Flow Yoga. I do occasional workshops, as well, that I will make sure to share information about when the time comes.

Thank you again. In these chaotic times, now, more than ever, it is essential we walk the path of cultivating a compassionate a heart, and lean into the sacredness of our Sangha. Wishing you all a wonderful last week of Summer.

With Gratitude,
Griffen

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Anyone interested in the $149 group rate for duct/dryer cleaning?

Michael will be cleaning our air vents and dryer vents soon (he also offers chimney cleaning if needed) . He recently did an excellent job at a nearby property—very thorough, punctual, and professional. If you have allergies, notice extra dust, or haven't cleaned your vents in over a year, it's probably time. He quoted $400, but with 3–4 houses it's $149 for one AC unit house. If interested, PM me your contact number and house address so I can add you to the list. Thanks! Or text me at 786-927-4854. Don't forget to mention Michael's name.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Modest protest of DC occupation

I heard this during our sangha tonight, and I couldn't figure out what it was. Apparently people in neighborhoods in DC, including Adams Morgan, are bagging on pots and pans at 8 pm every night as a protest of the city's occupation. People are doing this from their windows and also at 18th and Columbia, maybe elsewhere:

I plan to go out to 18th and Columbia when I can (not tomorrow). It's something.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Activism & Engaged Buddhism in DC

Hi Community,

In light of our political times, I am creating a group for those interested in engaged Buddhism — a movement seeking to practice Buddhist principles through social justice, environmental stewardship, and peace-building.

The group can take many forms, whether it is volunteering together, co-creating a project or campaign, practicing conflict resolution and dialogue, joining political actions, etc. Ultimately, I believe that what we are meant to create will arise and become clear as we come together.

Because we are practicing within a frame of activism, and as a person of color with an immigrant background, I would also like to gently encourage BIPOC folks who are interested to join. It is important to me that we bring together a diverse group of people in order to engage with a multiplicity of perspectives.

If you are interested, please sign up here and feel free to share this message with anyone you know who might be interested!

Take care,
Natalie

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Growing Community By Listening with the Ears of the Heart

Dear friends,

This Sunday, we'll contiue to explore the Insight Dialogue guideline Listen Deeply, by listening to one another with the ears of our hearts.  During difficult times, our body's liimbic system is aroused, making it difficult to truly listen to one another as our minds shift to trying to fix things.  However, it is during difficult times that we need to connect with one another the most and foster community.  This Sunday, we will practice Insight Dialogue with a particular emphasis on reconnecting the mind with the heart as we listen in practice together.

The evening will include a guided meditation, brief dharma talk, and Insight Dialogue practice in pairs.

No prior experience is necessary—just a spirit of kindness and curiosity!  We hope you can join us!

Warmly,
Maura Flanagan and Vince Lampone

  • In-person: Sunday, 7 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sangha Activity - Garden Haiku Walk & Book Launch | Aug 24

Hello!

<3 Jude

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Training for dharma-oriented clinicians

Dear Downtown Dharma Community,

My name is Devin, and, as some of you know, I'm a teacher with the IMCW and a guest teacher with Downtown Dharma.

In addition to teaching the dharma, I am a licensed clinical social worker and make my livelihood as a psychotherapist in private practice in Bethesda where I see adult clients both in person and virtually.

Over the years, dharma students have reached out to me about incorporating meditation into a therapy practice, and I've enjoyed mentoring and providing career support for these students.

That is why I'm excited to share with this community that I'm expanding my therapy practice by hiring associates who have a similar orientation to the work. I will help these associates build a client base, learn the business of running a therapy practice, and provide supervision hours toward licensure. Supervision will include case consultations and training that draws from my experience as a meditator and a therapist.

If anyone you know is looking for this kind of training and support, please feel free to pass along my contact information. I am also open to providing supplemental supervision for both social workers and counselors who are already with another practice, but want to integrate mindfulness, somatic work, parts work, or the dharma into their practice.

And, of course, if you're looking for a therapist who has a foundation in mindfulness and dharma teachings, please feel free to reach out. You can read more about the practice at oaklightcounseling.com, and you can contact me at devin@oaklightconseling.com

With love,

Devin
