[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: Rooted in the Absolute, Responsive in the Relative

Greetings Dear Sangha,

When the world feels impossible, confusion reigns. When keeping up with current events becomes a daily encounter with destabilization, can we just be? We may hear the voice that says we need to jump into action precisely now... and then the one that suggests it's better to just retreat into detachment. Yet the Dharma offers another Way—one that can help us stay connected without being consumed.

This Sunday, we'll reflect on a central Dharma teaching on the Two Truths: the Relative and the Absolute. These two ways of seeing are often misunderstood as opposites, but in Buddhist tradition, they illuminate one another. We'll explore the Two Truths teaching, its relationship to form and emptiness, and practice bringing it to life in a way that can support us through overwhelm, grief, and failure, as well as deep care and possibility.

I hope you'll join us for an evening sitting practice, Dharma reflection, and connection with one another.

In-person: Sunday, 7:00 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

Online via Zoom:  Join here

A reminder if you're joining us in person: please arrive at least 10 minutes early as the line to check in can be long. There are plenty of friends to make while you're waiting for the formal program to begin.

In Sangha,

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Fall Contemplative Haiku Hike: Nov 2 at Noon

This is a reminder that our Fall Contemplative Haiku Hike is Sunday (Nov 2) at Noon!

Plan to come? Please RSVP on Partiful if you have not already or reply to this email. Please update your RSVP or let us know if you are no longer able to come. Join us at the picnic tables near Peirce Barn (2401 Tilden St NW). We will leave for the hike itself (see route below) after a brief discussion about how to write haiku, so please try to be on time.

Getting there: Consider coming early if you plan to park in a nearby lot as space is sometimes limited on weekends. Our hike is a loop, so we will return to nearby parking. The nearest Capital Bikeshare station is Tilden & Connecticut. You are generally not permitted to park e-bikes in Rock Creek Park, so plan ahead. Our start location is a 20 min walk from both the Van Ness-UDC and Cleveland Park Metro stations.

The forecast is sunny with a high of 62 and a low of 44. Please wear comfortable clothing, layers, and shoes appropriate for hiking through Rock Creek Park. Please note the hike route has some steep inclines and declines and may be strenuous for some people. There is a lot of leaf cover on the ground on hills, so slipping is a major possibility. Wear shoes with good tread and please walk carefully. We will take breaks and go slow. Please consider bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Please bring a pen and notebook.

Please let us know if you have any questions--looking forward to see you all there!

<3 Shannon & Judy

 Approximate hike route (~2.5 miles)

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Insight Dialogue weekend retreat: Nov 22-23 in Tenleytown

Hi friends,

Lately, I've been reflecting on how much easier it is to be steady and resilient when we're not trying to do it alone.

It's a blessing to have so many ways to support each other in sangha. And next month, we'll have another opportunity: a weekend retreat in DC, right before Thanksgiving, focused on finding steadiness and balanced care for our world.

When I think about who might be most interested, a few groups come to mind:

  • Those who care deeply, yet sometimes feel the weight of it: Whether your concern is for people close to you or for the wider world, this retreat offers a chance to steady the heart — to stay open and engaged without being overwhelmed.

  • Those drawn to authentic, compassionate communication: If you value Insight Dialogue, NVC, or relational mindfulness, this retreat will deepen the skills of listening, speaking, and attuning from awareness.

  • Those longing for the depth of retreat but not wanting to travel far: It offers a chance to immerse in sustained relational meditation right here in DC.

The retreat is dana-based and led by two seasoned Insight Dialogue teachers. The $50 fee supports logistics, but if it's a barrier, please reach out to me directly to sign up.

It'd be a joy to see you next month.

With love,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday at Downtown Dharma: Transformation

Dear beloved sangha,

Most of us have goals: we want to be liked, or good looking, or successful, or simply be happy. In other words, we want to transform to something different than what we are.

However, we don't often don't step back and wholeheartedly reflect on the goals to which we aspire. This Sunday we'll gather to consider from a Buddhist perspective two questions central to our lives: what is it that I want to transform to?, and, how can I transform myself?

We'll start with a meet-each-other icebreaker, meditate, do a little QiGong, I'll give a short talk, and we'll do break-out groups.

This is a wonderful opportunity to gather in spiritual community and make new friends. Come join!

🙏🏻♥️

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Engaged Buddhism & Nonviolent Communication

Hello Everyone!

Engaged Buddhism DC is a sangha that recently formed for those wanting to bridge their spiritual practice with activism to meet the current political moment. The group now has about 50 members and will be doing monthly community meetings and workshops!

Our October workshop will be "Nonviolent Communication & Political Discourse" held this Saturday, October 25th from 11am to 1pm at the West End Library (Meeting Room 1) and facilitated by the lovely Kristen Wall. Here is a blurb from Kristen:

"Hi all! I am excited to get together for the Nonviolent Communication workshop this Saturday. We'll be asking each other: What are our guiding values? What does it mean to empower each other to engage nonviolently not only in action but also in spirit? How do we embrace both love and power? And how can we turn apparent conflict into creativity and more integrated action and ideas within our group? I aim to have all of us leave with new ideas for nonviolent action as well as individual and group practices to facilitate mutual understanding and effective decision-making.

We will be starting right at 11am so please arrive EARLY if at all possible so that we can all start on the same page. Suggested to bring a notebook and something to write with."

Our workshops are free of charge, and Kristen has requested that any dana that folks want to contribute be sent directly to Migrant Solidarity Mutual AidIf you would like to join this event and/or Engaged Buddhism DC, please message me directly and I will add you to the event invite and group!

With gratitude,
Natalie

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma Reading Group 2026 Availability

Hi everyone,

As I mentioned last night, the Downtown Dharma reading group will be held at the Washington Buddhist Vihara Society starting in January 2026. We're still in the planning stages of relaunching this program, so I wanted to offer a poll for those interested to share what days work best for them. We'll be meeting once a week and the times are flexible at this point.

** If you'd like to participate in the reading group, please fill out this When2Meet poll with your preferred days and times by December 1st, 2025. **

Also, if you'd like to contribute potential readings or topics for next year, feel free to reach out to me or Megan Williams (currently traveling) with any thoughts or feedback.

Looking forward to building this program with you all!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Musicality of Being returns October 25, November 8 & 22

Hi Friends,

Next Saturday is the next Musicality of Being community walking meditation in Rock Creek Park. As always, the workshop runs 10am-1pm and returns every 2 weeks. Below I share a recent poetic description of what the experience is like.

More workshop description and registration here (scroll all the way down if you would like to access the sliding scale payment option).

Would love to connect with some of you in the park next weekend!

Warmly,
Seth Dellinger

Moving under the sun-speckled tree canopy,
Leaves of orange-yellow, red-green, red-yellow, orange-green,
The sun realigning each time I step,
The trees streaming past me as I flow forward.

My vision bounces to the rhythm of my walking.
Rhythmic pulsing patterns of light-shadow-light-shadow-light
That match the way the trail massages my feet.

"I'm noticing the shape of the land," says my walking partner
And suddenly my perception is rearranged. Vision widening,
I feel the contours, slopes and curves of the world
Pressing into me, then pulling me forward
With their nearness and their distance.

Just at the moment that I open my mouth to respond, a bird calls.
I hesitate, recalibrate and wait to see if it calls again.
It does. "Hearing that," I say, "I'm noticing that melody,"
Pointing my finger to the treetops, to the bird that I can't see.

Like this we walk, trading silence and sound, resonance and rest,
Speaking and listening, and listening to the sensation of listening,
Feeling the feeling that we may or may not be separate beings,
That we may or may not be human beings
Or wind or trees or sky or bird calls
Or memories or laughter or sunshine through colored leaves.

This is here for us to share, anytime and anywhere,
Just because we are alive and we know how to feel, how to listen.
All we need to do is remember that we know how to remember,
Then invite ourselves to remember and invite the others.

Each human being that walks by my side reminds me
That the musicality of being weaves eternal melody,
Infinite layers of rhythm and irrepressible harmony
Through the winding up-and-downhills of our collective journey.

Inhales, exhales, heart beats, left-right-left-right footfalls,
Sunlight sparkling across the moving surface of the creek
Where we pause to sit and be mesmerized by the divine
Before we turn again towards each other, feeling together
The terror and beauty of looking into each other's eyes.

We are alive. We are alive. We are alive. We are alive.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: The art of opening

Michele and Ben asked me to share this note about Sunday's gathering at Yoga District. I hope to see you then!

-----

Hi Dharma Friends,

Ben Lasso and Michele Bledsoe will co-facilitate Insight Dialogue this Sunday from 7-8:30pm at Downtown Dharma.

No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and kindness.

Together, we'll explore the first three Insight Dialogue guidelines—Pause, Relax, and Open—and how the inner practices of Pause and Relax can naturally lead into the relational practice of Open.

We'll begin by cultivating the inner practices of pausing and relaxing, then gradually expand our awareness outward—first to our surroundings, and then to one another.  Moving slowly and gently, we'll notice, moment by moment, whatever arises.   We'll practice in pairs, allowing mindfulness to extend into the shared field of awareness and connection.

We'd love to share this time of practice with you!

Warmly,
Ben & Michele
