[Downtown Dharma Listserve] "Just Sayin'" - A Two Part Exploration of Giving and Receiving Feedback

Greetings Dear Community,

After missing even the online version of you these past few months, I'm happy to return to our online Sangha tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm and will be joining you again next Sunday, July 18. This gives us the opportunity for a two-part series on giving and receiving feedback in our relationships.

Margaret Wheatley writes: "All life thrives on feedback and dies without it." When it comes to our human relationships, how we go about the feedback process makes all the difference, leading to either mutual thriving or mutual breakdown. Hazards abound. Even if we can see the merits, we all likely know the pain of receiving feedback unskillfully shared. As well, we know the regret of harming others when our intention to just "share our truth" goes awry. Yet we also know that conflict avoidance is it's own trap inside of which authentic connection can starve to death. Indeed, the daily news is rife with stories of violence founded in unshared realities.

How might the Dharma support us giving and receiving feedback in a way that builds our relationships instead of eroding them? Spoiler alert: we begin with our own minds. In this first of two explorations, we'll look at Dharma practices, beginning with wise attention and wise intention, that support us as we enter into situations where conflict might be skillfully addressed.

As usual, we'll begin with a period of sitting together, and after the dharma talk, share in community conversation. Zoom details follow below. I look forward to being with you.

Thank you for your practice,
Kristin
