Though not in attendance, the remarks of MOLC Founder and Chairman Dr. Douglas E. Edwards were read by Francine Flood: "[A]s you write your history, make certain that it reflects the most important aspects of your life – the portions that you want to be remembered for, and then those who follow in your footsteps will be able to climb even higher as they journey through this world. . . . Soar to the heights of an eagle. . . high above the clouds; land softly as a dove, and never be afraid of failure. It's only an opportunity to gain the strength you need to climb over the next obstacle that comes your way. . . ." Keynote speaker Kenneth C. Williams, assistant to the Prince George's County Council administrator, thanked the participants for their "diligence, perseverance and energy you brought to the many weeks you participated in this program. You're leaving knowing how you have changed others' lives, not just your own." Williams discussed the richness of relationships – both vertical and horizontal, stating that while "I matter," individuality becomes more powerful when people align themselves with others. "With the collectiveness of our strength [and the development of friendships, [we] become a family, with one goal in mind, and that is to keep moving forward." In closing, Williams quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, who said, "A man can't ride you unless your back is bent." Williams said, "Stay straight, and although life has it's challenges, keep moving forward." The program also included a dance presentation by participant Charde Lawrence, a poem written by participant and mistress of ceremonies Cheila Thomas, and reflections from former program participants. At the end of the event, Maryrose Lyles got a surprise: Her students presented her with a home-made gift in appreciation for what they have learned in the program. Graduates of the program are as follows: Raphael Coates Yolanda Joyner Charde Lawrence Pearl Maynard Christina Sellers Cheila Thomas Williams Watts | MOLC Distributes Care Packages for the Homeless On Thursday, May 5, MOLC partnered with Good Shepherd Church in Waldorf to help the homeless.
