[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Making the Invisible Visible and White Awake

Hello dear ones!

At sangha this last Sunday I mentioned a resource posted by Spirit Rock: Making the Invisible Visible. Folks asked me to share the link (it's embedded here).

Sangha on Sunday focused on climate change and Earth Care Week (thank you, Hugh!) Towards the end of the night we were having a conversation about forces that have (and have not) moved Western-convert Buddhist sanghas towards an engaged practice. Making the Invisible Visible is a booklet represents part of a ongoing process of people of color (and their white allies) who practice within Western sanghas to bring attention to the ways in which racism in the larger society is reflected in the sangha. The stories and essays shared here offer valuable insights into the cultural traits of Western-convert sanghas, and the voices of POC are one force within Western sanghas that has pushed us towards a more engaged presence.

I also mentioned that I work with white people in support of racial awareness as a spiritual practice and a foundation for confronting these dynamics of racism within ourselves and our sanghas. If you are interested in learning more about what I do, see my website: whiteawake.org. I am currently honored to be in the position of supporting white IMCW teachers and leadership in doing some concentrated work around racial awareness as part of IMCW's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Hope you all are having a good week!

Blessings,
Eleanor Hancock
