[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: Alive and Awake with Connection - Part 1 of 2, The Inner Field

Greetings Dear Sangha,

This Sunday, we'll begin a two-part exploration of Dharma as relational practice. In the first of these two, we'll focus on the inner field—our relationship with our own experience in the present moment. What happens when we stop leaning forward to what's next or backward into what is already gone, and instead arrive here, fully, with a body, mind, and heart subfused with the awareness of relationship? In particular, how might we cultivate a way of relating to ourselves that is wild with choices instead of trapped in habitual patterns? More broadly, how can the Dharma be known, not just conceptually but experientially, as a pursuit alive with connection and possibility? What then, might this mean for how we relate to the world outside ourselves, so fraught with confusion, so in need of our enduring love?

I hope you'll join us for practicing together and opening to our lives as a continuous field of relationship.

In-person: Sunday, 7:00 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

Online via Zoom:  Join here

A reminder if you're joining us in person: please arrive at least 10 minutes early as the line to check in can be long. There are plenty of friends to make while you're waiting for the formal program to begin.

In Sangha,

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] 'Musicality of Being' workshop in Rock Creek Park

Dear Downtown Dharma friends,

I want to share with you some information and an invitation to a workshop that I've been hosting in Rock Creek Park since 2021, something that originally began as a response to the social isolation of the COVID pandemic. It's called the Musicality of Being.

We spend 3 hours together, surrounded by natural beauty, walking the trails, dialoguing with partners and as a whole group, meditating by the creek and exploring the somatic connections between all these moving parts. In the process, we cultivate awareness of ourselves, each other and the surrounding life of the park.

It's a kind of immersion into sensation, emotion, perception, movement and relationship. By slowing down together in beautiful surroundings we highlight these qualities in a new way, while recognizing that this richness is actually available in any present moment experience when we are deeply attuned. It's a wonderful antidote for the current chaos of the world, including here in Washington DC!

Having participated in Sunday gatherings with Downtown Dharma for a couple months now, I am really enjoying getting to know the community. I think that many of you might really love this event which includes elements of meditation and insight dialogue in addition to the outdoors experience.

The workshop is being offered every other weekend throughout the year. Returning participants love how the practice deepens each time.

The next one is this Saturday September 27. Two more workshops will be offered in October on the 11th & 25th. All workshops are 10am-1pm.

You can register here. The cost is $20. There is a sliding scale option if that's better for you.

And please feel free to reach out to me with any questions at sethbdellinger@gmail.com

Warmly,
Seth Dellinger

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sunday Sept 21: Sharing well wishes with a partner

Hi friends,

So good to be with you all last night. Here's the poem we began with, as well as the Insight Dialogue workshop link for those interested. May it all support us in nourishing our intention to cultivate real love in the days ahead.

Wellness Check by Andrea Gibson
In any moment,
on any given day,
I can measure
my wellness
by this question:

Is my attention on loving,
or is my attention on
      who isn't loving me?

And as bell hooks reminds us:
"Love is as love does. Love is an act of will—namely, both an intention and an action. Will also implies choice. We do not have to love. We choose to love."

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Re: Insight Dialogue Group - Invitation to Join

Hi everyone,

Gentle reminder on the below invitation.  We have a spot remaining in our Insight Dialogue group and will begin next week.

Kind regards,
Amitabh

On Sun, Sep 7, 2025 at 1:36 PM Amitabh Saxena <amitabh.montreal@gmail.com> wrote:

Good afternoon friends,

Last year, we began a peer-led Insight Dialogue (ID) practice group in DC from October to May.  As a few members have opted to move on, there is now space for a handful of new members (about 6) to join.

If you're interested in joining, here are some details:

·          The small group (12 people) will meet every two weeks or so for about 1.5 hrs.  We'll take turns to volunteer as facilitators during the course of our time together; some sessions can follow this user-friendly guide, while others can be more open and at the discretion of the facilitator.

·          We are thinking of tentatively meeting on Wednesdays in the early evening (around 7 to 8:30 pm, or 7:30 pm to 9 pm) in and around Northwest DC; we hope to have at least 2 members who can open up their homes for the group, so the exact locations are TBD.

·          Depending on how soon we gather enough members, we can aim to start as early as the week of September 15.

·          The hope is that those interested can commit to attending about 5 of the 7 or so sessions for the rest of 2025, and ideally stay on until May 2026.  We'll aim to accommodate regular holidays (Thanksgiving, end-of-year, etc.) as well as any other weeks where many people may be away.

·          There is no cost to participate.  No experience with Insight Dialogue is necessary, nor is any experience necessary in facilitation.  It is recommended, however, that participants do have some mindfulness practice to fully benefit from the group discussions.

The above are best guesses; specifics on venue, timing, and dates, will be determined by the group itself.

If you are interested in joining, please fill out the form here, or reach out directly if you have any questions I can help answer.

Kind regards,

Amitabh

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An Evening with Downtown Dharma Sangha: Under the Bodhi Tree: Sitting Still and Creating Sacred Community

Under the Bodhi Tree: Sitting Still and Creating Sacred Community

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  9/14/2025  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location

  • In-person:1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitators- Travis M. Spencer

During our time together, we will participate in a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing. We will discuss sitting still in the face of uncertainty and how it leads to spiritual awakening. This Sangha is truly supporting us in coming together and beginning to reflect on what community looks like in the present moment, especially with all that is unfolding in our lives and in our society. Together, we will explore how we awaken to our true selves, not only as individuals, but as a community committed to presence, compassion, and collective healing.

The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. And the practice can be carried out as a group, as a city, as a nation." —Thich Nhat Hanh.

Imagine trees standing together in a forest. They don't talk, but they feel each other's presence. When you look at them, you might say they aren't doing anything. But they are growing and providing clean air for living things to breathe. Instead of describing sitting meditation as the practice of concentration, looking deeply, and getting insight, I like to describe sitting as enjoying doing nothing. Primarily, sitting is to enjoy the pleasure of sitting, being fully alive and in touch with the wonders of our working bodies, the cool air, the sounds of people and birds, and the changing colors of the sky.

- Thich Nhat Hanh
