[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma: Insight Dialogue Practice This Sunday

Dear Friends,

Vince Lampone and I will be co-facilitating an Insight Dialogue session this Sunday, and we hope you can join us.  We are going to be exploring how giving and receiving generosity from one another helps to reduce our suffering and reminds us that we are all interconnected.

No prior Insight Dialogue experience is necessary, just your presence and your openness to listening closely and speaking with intention with a practice partner.  In case this is your first time encountering Insight Dialogue practice, please expect some participatory conversation as we play with the six ID guidelines of: pause; relax; open; attune to emergence; listen deeply; and speak deeply.

We'll start with a short silent guided meditation, after which we'll break into dyads or triads for relational practice.

We hope to see you there—online or in person!

• In-person: Sunday, September 15th, 7-8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC (please arrive 5-10 minutes early)

• Online via Zoom: zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz0

Warmly,

Maura Flanagan

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tonight: Why Buddhism?

Greetings Dear Sangha,

As a group of people in the DC area and online, we come together every Sunday evening to collectively explore the wisdom and practices of the Buddha. But why that last part? What is it, in particular, about a set of teachings 2,600 years old that could possibly be relevant in 2024? Amid social polarization, climate crisis, and of course the everyday stresses of our daily lives, why give your time and attention to this?

This evening, we'll explore the fundamental cornerstones that, in my mind, make these teachings so uniquely helpful to us, individually and collectively, today.

I hope you can join us this evening from 7 to 8:30pm for the development of our practice, wisdom, and community.
With love and gratitude,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Interested in fall reading groups?

Hi all,

Downtown Dharma typically has a meditation/Buddhist-themed reading group and potluck every month. This is a wonderful chance to deepen connections and explore ideas outside the Sunday sits. Recent topics have included anxiety, bodhisattvas, nonviolent communication, and eco-Buddhism. Future topics could be whatever you want!

For a reading group to happen:
* Someone needs to volunteer to host a group of ~10 people for a talk and potluck;
* and someone (could be the same or a different person) needs to volunteer to facilitate the group. Facilitating involves choosing reading(s) (could be a book, article, video, podcast, etc.) and leading a discussion.

If either of these sound like something you'd like to do this fall, please let me know!

With metta,
Ava Morgenstern

Mindful Helper:

This Sunday's session will focus on dealing with strong emotions using the analogy of a tree in a storm. We will practice mindful breathing, which involves focusing on the rise and fall of the abdomen to stay calm during emotional challenges. The main message is that just like storms, emotions are temporary and will pass if we stay centered and aware. Through mindfulness practice, we can build the confidence to handle tough times without feeling overwhelmed by our thoughts and feelings.

  • In my dharma share, I'll explore this question: How can I stay calm in strong emotions and believe that my feelings are temporary and will go away?
