September 20, 2021
Welcome to Fall!

Mission of Love Charities is still going strong, providing the array of food, financial assistance, job training and other services low-income people in our community need.

We are still seeing about 2,000 people a month at our facility at 6180 Old Central Avenue. People need everything from food, to financial help to pay the rent, help to apply for Food Stamps, Job Training so they can get a new job, referrals to get help for mental or physical health problems, furniture, clothing, and simple things like a shower and laundry.

The impact of the pandemic is severe. People who were making it are now in trouble, needing the basic things of life for themselves and their families.

We depend on financial donations from our friends and stakeholders, as well as the donations of clean clothing and non-upholstered furniture to be available to the people who come to us asking for help. If you can help, please reach out to us.
Lots of Special Events Coming Up – The Public is Invited
Mission of Love Charities will hold its annual Coat and Shoe Drive on Saturday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will be giving away coats and shoes to needy families as they prepare for the cold months to come. The give-away will last until supplies are depleted.

The annual distribution of Thanksgiving Food Baskets will be held on Tuesday, November 23, (two days before Thanksgiving) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food baskets with all the makings for a Thanksgiving dinner will be distributed to low-income individuals and families. There’s a limit of one basket per household.

There will be the annual Christmas Toy Giveaway on Saturday, December 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Toys will be handed out to low-income families and children.

Christmas Food Baskets date to be determined

Everybody participating in these distribution events must be registered with Mission of Love Charities, which can be done on site the day of the event.

All events will be at the Mission of Love Charities facility at 6180 Old Central Avenue in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Job Training and Workforce Development
Mission of Love Charities is presenting an Employee Readiness Bootcamp Monday, Oct. 18 through Friday, Nov. 19. The classes will be ten 60-minute sessions for five weeks and will be presented digitally online. They will help people get ready for applying for a job, helping people to learn new skills, find their strengths and be better prepared. Financial Literacy and Management, Temperaments, Emotional Intelligence, Conflict Resolution, Decision Making, Racial Sobriety, Situational Leadership, Strategic Thinking, Meeting Management, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Developing High Performance Traits are among the topics that will be covered in these classes.

An OSHA Construction Course will be offered online Wednesday, Sept. 29 – Friday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m.

Go to www.molcinc.org or call (301) 333-4440 to register for either class.
Mental Health Counseling
Mental Health Counseling will be provided to people who stop by Mission of Love Charities on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. DXT Therapeutic Services, a mental health agency, will provide help, guidance and therapy for adults, adolescents and children. People who have concerns about an array of behavioral and mental health issues are encouraged to come by and talk to the professionals from DXT Therapeutic Services.

Making Progress in the Rebuilding and Renovation of Our New Facility
Mission of Love Charities is moving ahead with plans to develop, renovate and rebuild the old school building (formerly Lyndon Hill Elementary School) across the street from its current location, making it the new facility for the Mission. While we have attracted significant funding for this project, we still need to raise a significant amount of money to achieve this task. The plans are tentatively to finish the project by late 2022. Needless to say, the prospect of new and expanded space is very encouraging for the future of the Mission
Donations and Financial Support Welcomed from One and All
Running the ongoing services of providing food and financial assistance to the thousands of community residents who come to the Mission seeking help is an expensive proposition. In order to sustain this operation, we depend on the financial support of friends and stakeholders from across the community. We welcome donations, large and small. If you are able, please consider making a donation here.

Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez
