[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] “Spiritual Friends” groups

From the Downtown Dharma Whatsapp chat > "Small
Group formations" subchat.

 - join the Whatsapp group here :

Greetings Sangha. We're creating this group as hopefully skillful response to the particular challenges members of Downtown Dharma may be holding. _Kalyana mitta_ or "spiritual friendship" is considered essential to Buddhist practice and points to the critical role of community in wise response to suffering. In contemporary Insight Buddhist communities, "Spiritual Friend Groups" or "KM groups" are a proven way to provide mutual support and a shared space for development. So, as an experiment, this WhatsApp channel can be a space for the formation of KM / Spiritual Friends Groups. Groups can general or form around a particular theme (e.g., BIPOC, Govt Employees, Climate & Ecological, etc.). It's up to the groups themselves to experiment with what may resonate. Groups can be started here (#forming), perhaps you already have a group but have room to add some new members (#adding), or you might post if you're open to joining a group that's either being formed or adding members (#seeking). Feel free to share #formats for group gatherings or other #organizing tips that you have found helpful as well. Thanks for coming to this space. Let's discover and share what can lead onward.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] URGENT NEED FOR HOUSING

Dear community,

I need your help! I'm in need of urgent housing -- my current roommate has been accosting my other roommate and me. I've been subletting and am hoping to find another sublet immediately. My budget is tight (under $1200) but I'm open to something more expensive temporarily. I currently live in Petworth and am open to any other neighborhoods in DC. If you have any leads, please feel free to text me at 415-806-8934

Thank you so much!
Omisha

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday: Questioning Silence

Dear Sangha,

As a member of our community here in the nation's capital, you may be feeling distressed or even overwhelmed by the actions emanating from the new administration. It is as if madness itself has taken the wheel and many of us, perhaps you yourself, are directly impacted. How can the wisdom and practices from the mindfulness traditions support us in meeting not just the suffering in our hearts, but our everyday obligations and the missions that move us? Furthermore, you may be asking, where is the response? How is it that we don't see an organized, empowered, ignited counter movement to join?

This Sunday, we'll be making space and time for collective difficulty, for that is an essential role for Sangha. We'll then investigate how we might read and misread what appears to be inaction, what sounds like silence. We'll conclude by inviting possibilities for more connection within our Sangha, if that is indeed helpful.

In this crucial time for this city and our particular community, I hope you will join us.

In-person: Sunday, 7 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC (please arrive 5-10 minutes early)

Online via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/466237117?pwd=cGxHaTJlTVhBdldVSk8weDZuSW5udz09

In Sangha,

Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Relational practice immersion: March 29 & 30

Dear friends,

I'm writing to invite you to a special event, taking place on March 29 and 30 at JourneySpace in Glen Echo. It's called Lyric Attunement: A Relational Practice and Embodiment Workshop. Three of my closest friends and collaborators – Tara Dougans, Garrett Jones, and Tyler Stuart – are coming from Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria (respectively) to lead this workshop with me.

I'm inviting you to join us because I've mentioned Circling in some of my Downtown Dharma talks. If you're interested, I'd love to have a deep experience of the practice with you. Circling -- which my lineage-holders now call Transformational Connection -- is a present-moment relational practice; it is a form of interpersonal meditation. You can learn more about it here.

Garrett, Tara, Tyler and I comprise a group that we call Lyric. We are a kind of "Circling quartet," and we have been practicing together weekly for the past fifteen months. What we offer you during the weekend will represent the deepest offering we can make from our collective intelligence and love.

This will be the deepest relational practice container I've ever led in DC.

At the workshop, you can expect:

  • to connect deeply with your own body through movement and vocalization practices

  • to feel a sense of wonder as you find news ways of relating to other human beings

  • to feel a sense of adventure and growth as you explore your own interpersonal edges

  • to relax with spacious time for integration, journaling, snacks, and silence

You can read more here, and read some testimonials here, to get a sense of our flavor.

A few Downtown Dharma friends are already registered. I hope to see you there –

Love,

Ellen // Dechen

What: A two-day Circling and embodiment workshop called Lyric Attunement

When: March 29 (9:30-6:30) and March 30 (9:30-5:00)

Where: JourneySpace, a spacious and light-filled healing studio in Glen Echo, MD

Cost: $103.80, with an invitation to offer more if you would like to

To register: You can RSVP to me by email. I'll then send payment info, and your space will be held once you send your workshop fee/donation.

Getting there: We'll use a google spreadsheet to help folks carpool to Journey Space – it's about a 15-minute drive from Friendship Heights Metro.

About the workshop cost: Our practice is to make our workshops as accessible as possible, so that goodness can flow freely from our work. In setting the workshop costs, we do not include compensation for ourselves. We choose to practice trusting in life by inviting folks to gift to us if they are able.

The cost of the workshop covers facilitator travel and food, as well as the space rental. If you're able to give more than this amount, we invite you to offer whatever feels good to you right now. There will also be an opportunity to gift to us at the end of the workshop. If this amount represents a hardship for you, but you'd still like to come, please let me know and we can find an amount that works.
