Hi Dharma friends,
I'm looking forward to meditating and exploring the Dharma together tomorrow evening from 7:00-8:30 PM at Yoga District on 14th St and on Zoom.
To introduce tomorrow's topic, I'll start with a question: Have you ever had someone listen with attentiveness and curiosity to a problem you're noodling on, without giving any opinions or advice? When it happens to me, it brings peace to the depths of my being. It feels like real love.
Tomorrow's class will be the first in a four-class series I'll be offering on the four Appamāṇā, often translated as immeasurables or boundless qualities of heart and mind. I find it helpful to think of them as attitudes. The Buddha encouraged his students to meet all aspects of experience with these four attitudes, or qualities of heart. The attitude I described above, on the part of the listener, is upekkhā, equanimity, and will be the topic of tomorrow's talk. As good as it feels to have someone listen to us with equanimity, it also feels liberating to cultivate this attitude within our own minds — to look and listen to the world with curiosity and without attachment. In Buddhist cosmology, these are qualities of the gods. Though upekkhā is typically taught last in this series, I'll be teaching in reverse order to offer a fresh approach for those who have studied this material in the past.
