Dear Downtown Dharma Community,

The days leading up to the upcoming election, and the days following it, are bound to produce a range of intense emotions and feelings.  In light of this, there will be a special evening of mindfulness on Friday, November 8, from 8 pm to 9:30 pm.  The title of the session is Now more than ever: wisdom and love in a changing world.

We are fortunate to have Devin Maroney, an affiliate teacher with the IMCW, lead a meditation and give a brief talk on this topic.  We will then move to an Insight Dialogue activity to deeply explore these themes and share with a meditation partner.

Yoga District on 14th St has graciously agreed to open up space for us.  For those interested in attending in-person, please register ahead of time on the Yoga District website so we can get an accurate headcount, as space is limited and there may be a high demand for the session.  The session will also be livestreamed via the Zoom link below.

See you then,

Amitabh

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Cacao circle tonight in Meridian Hill Park

Dear sangha,

I imagine some of you are processing some big emotions today post-election and may want to connect in like-hearted community. If you feel called to gather with others in a safe space, I'll be hosting a cacao circle tonight for up to 9 people from 6-7:30pm in Meridian Hill Park.

I'll guide us through some gentle stretching and a meditation while sipping cacao, a heart-opening plant that supports us in connecting with our feeling bodies. I'll also share some prompts for reflection and discussion and leave time for open dialogue.

To RSVP, add your name and email to this Google Sheet before 4:45pm ET so I can get an accurate headcount and prepare the cacao.

Sending peace, love, and care,
Jenny

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Re: Sangha Activity - Celebrate Fall with a Contemplate Haiku Hike

Hello!

Looking for something positive and relaxing to look forward to? As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, there is still so much beautiful nature to experience. We are excited to continue this informal Downtown Dharma haiku series with an autumnal hike through Rock Creek 😊

What: Please join us for our Fall Contemplative Haiku Hike through Rock Creek Park! Participants will learn how haiku relate to mindfulness and Zen Buddhism and receive brief instructions on how to write haiku. We will then take a mindful 2-mile hike, taking breaks to write our own haiku about the nature we observe. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment. Find examples of famous haiku here.)

When: Saturday, November 30, Noon-4pm (We will inform the sangha listserv and RSVP'd participants at least 24 hours in advance if the event will be canceled due to inclement weather.)

Where: We will meet at Noon at Saku Saku Flakerie in Cleveland Park. Then, we will hike approximately 2.3 miles on Reservation 630 Trail to a cafe in Mount Pleasant. See the tentative route at the bottom of this email.

Who: Please RSVP at this sign-up sheet. All are welcome! While our pace will be slow and steady, this event is best suited for people who feel comfortable hiking more than 2 miles on park trails that are uneven and have some inclines and declines.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku. Paper and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring your own pen and a notebook if possible, as well as $$ for drinks or snacks at Saku Saku Flakerie and Dos Gringos Cafe.

Why: While haiku is not a strictly Buddhist form of poetry, haiku and Zen are closely linked historically and thematically. Haiku relies on the senses and encourages contemplation of the present moment, so both new and experienced meditators may enjoy practicing haiku as a way to engage with mindfulness. See additional resources at the bottom of this email for more info.

Re: [Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] join ecosattva training group?

Hi there,

I might be interested in this if scheduling permits. Wednesday evening in general a good option for me. Saturdays not as good (late afternoon maybe but I work most Saturday evenings.)

I think meeting once a month or every three weeks would be about right for me. I am available on Wednesday evenings and weekends - late afternoon/early evening. I could start in December 2024 or January 2025. I prefer meeting in-person, but am open to a mix of online and in-person gatherings.

Much metta,

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Re: join ecosattva training group?

Greetings Sangha,

I mentioned the EcoSattva Training at the end of class last night and heard from a few folks afterwards who might be interested. I suggested a start date in January.

Let's start a list and perhaps continue to announce this on Sunday evenings if anyone is up to do that on the evenings that I'm not there.

With appreciation,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow Night: Steady through the Storm

Greetings Dear Sangha,

As the US election draws near, many of us are feeling tremendous uncertainty. In the midst of such tumultuous times, our deep concern for ourselves, our families, society, and the living Earth community can easily turn into overwhelm.

Trees have an outsized role in Buddhist traditions throughout history. For this moment, if we understood the language of trees, what would they teach us about weathering storms? Even if we don't speak fluent tree, when we pause, listen, resonate, what wisdom are they conveying nonetheless and all of the time? The wisdom and practices not just from Buddhist traditions but our everywhere kin can support and guide us through exactly these challenges. And, if we heed their call to steady our hearts with kind attention, so much more is on offer. What possibilities exist not only to meet our own suffering but show up for a suffering world?

I hope you can join us Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30pm for the development of our practice, wisdom, and community.
With love and gratitude,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma Survey Results and why to attend the Community Board meeting

Greetings,

In addition to Nate's invite, I'd like to share the Downtown Dharma survey results from a few months ago and encourage folks to attend the volunteer board meeting on November 15!

One recurring survey result was to have more community events in addition to existing events like Sunday sit, book club, etc. We couldn't agree more! For this reason, we invite all of you to the volunteer board meeting so you can share your ideas and find support to create more opportunities for connection with sangha members during the week. If you are available and seeking deeper community connections, please consider coming to the volunteer board meeting on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6pm at DC Writer's Salon in Adams Morgan. RSVP here

If you're unable to attend the meeting but would like support putting together an event, please email me!

Warmly,
Jackie

PS- Thank you to Joel for putting the survey results together in a powerpoint!

Hi all,

On November 15 we will continue our tradition of hosting a quarterly board meeting run by the community. We'll discuss the future of the Sangha while enjoying pizza and potluck dishes.

These are open to the entire Sangha, and are a chance to brainstorm about what we want the future of our Sangha to look like and what actions or initiatives we should take to get us there. Some of the actions that came out of previous meetings were: leading a Downtown Dharma retreat in September, creating posters with our mission statement, having greeters on Sunday nights, etc.

When: Friday November 15, 6:00pm

Where: DC Writer's Salon, 1807 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009

Please RSVP here and also feel free to add notes about any particular topic you'd like to cover. Notes from our previous meeting are here.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

-Nate
