Greetings Dear Sangha,
One of my formative teachers in the Dharma was Cheri Maples, a police-officer turned Plum Village nun who went on to teach in both Zen and Insight centers. Once after hearing my practice report on having arrived at a refined state of concentration, she shared that she was unimpressed by such achievements. I was taken aback. She went on to say that she was far more interested in me developing the ability to transform a painful emotion, to employ the practice to subvert harm and free my mind from even the most mundane state of suffering. This, she said, was the heart of the Buddha's teaching: a path to end suffering, not just for the benefit of my life but for the benefit of everyone in my life. More than ten years later, her teaching still rings like a bell in my heart and I'm so grateful for this redirection.
This Sunday, we'll explore the practice of relating to difficult emotions, the heart and mind in distress, as both a highly practical skill and as a gateway into profound insight.
We will gather this evening from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details are at the bottom of this email. If you plan to join in person, please especially take note of the need to register ahead of time through the Yoga District website.
I hope to see you there!
Kristin
Attending In Person
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yog...@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.
We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.
