Hi friends,
I have some questions for you:
What happens when you die? Are you reborn? Does your consciousness, ignorance and delusion manifest in the material world as a new life?
For many of us, the truth is that we do not know with certainty what happens. And yet as we look to the teachings of the Buddha for guidance, we cannot cast the concept of rebirth completely aside given its critical place in the discourses. Bikkhu Bodhi, who has translated the Pali Canon into English and is one of the leading scholars on Theravadan Buddhism in our time, has said that the teachings, without rebirth, are virtually "reduced to tatters."
The Buddha advised his followers "Ehipasiko," come and see for yourself, which can seem like a difficult directive on this particular subject. While I won't be offering an experiential journey into the afterlife this Sunday, I would like to offer us an opportunity to explore both intellectually and experientially our understanding of life and death.
We will gather this evening from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details are at the bottom of this email. If you plan to join in person, please especially take note of the need to register ahead of time through the Yoga District website.
With love,
Devin
Attending In Person
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yog...@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.
We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.
