[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Room Opening in Lamont Dharma House

Dear Sangha Members,

We have a room opening in our Lamont Dharma House! Here are the details. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Available 1/18/22. Rent is $1140.

We are an intentional group house centered around meditation and yoga, as well as laughter, and good food. Each of us has an ongoing daily practice, with buddhist vipassana meditation and yoga strongly represented.

Living in a community like the Lamont Dharma House is a unique opportunity to bring your meditation and/or yoga practice to the center of your life, and to explore how the community can support your practice in powerful ways.

Who are we?

We are an evenly balanced group of women and men of varying ages and backgrounds. At play, we can be found adventuring in nature, meditating, doing yoga, playing music and making art, riding bikes, reading, writing, cooking creative healthy food, traveling the world, exploring the city, and hosting dinners.

We each have our own spiritual practice and are here because we want to live in a community where we can deepen that practice. Our spiritual beliefs are diverse, but vipassana meditation and yoga are strongly represented.

Who are you?

We are seeking a new housemate who has an established spiritual practice and wants to deepen that practice in community with others. You should also be fun and respectful to live with as we all explore how to integrate spirituality into daily life in this wild, beautiful, challenging city.

You will be one of six housemates, all who are dedicated to deepening their spiritual practice in the community. Before the pandemic, the Dharma House would invite teachers into our home to hold classes and special events in yoga, meditation, dharma discussion and more. We have moved some of the programming to a virtual setting and are exploring how best to evolve our community engagement in new ways.

You should be willing to contribute time and emotional and spiritual energy to the house because you, like us, feel that this community-building work is well worth the rewards. That said, like most people in DC, we are busy professionals who balance all of this with demanding professional and personal lives. We are not a commune that's going to ask you to sign over your first-born child. But we do require more time and energy than a typical group house.

Our community is LGBTQ friendly and we encourage people from a broad range of backgrounds to apply.

Our space

Our 3-story townhouse is divided between a meditation and yoga space on the first floor and private living space - bedrooms, kitchen, living/dining room, washer/dryer - on the second and third floors. There is also a backyard with a beautiful garden and a firepit, a shaded deck off the second floor, and a basement for storage. There are 5 total long-term residents, and 1 shorter term resident, and 3.5 bathrooms

The house is located in the heart of Mt Pleasant, next to a seasonal farmer's market as well as many restaurants and cafes in Mt Pleasant. A number of bus lines (43, 43, S2, S4) pick up within a block from the house. Rock Creek Park is nearby. Columbia Heights Metro is about a 10-minute walk.

Rent is $1140 plus about $50-100 for shared expenses. The room is about 182.9 sqft.

If you're interested, please send us an email at lamontdharma@gmail.com. Here are some things we'd be interested to know...

Please tell us a bit about yourself, including:

(1) What is your spiritual practice? What do you do for fun and work?

(2) Tell us why you are interested in being a part of the Lamont Dharma House.

(3) Tell us your experiences living in community: have you lived in community before?

(4) What were the challenges and what did you enjoy? If you haven't lived in a community before, what is calling you to it now?

(5) What, if any, engagement have you had with our house? If you were to move in, what activities and responsibilities would you be most interested in participating in or leading?

For details and pictures, please see the house opening web page here.

We look forward to hearing from you! Metta
