[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Room Opening in Lamont Dharma House

Dear Sangha Members,

We have a room opening in our Lamont Dharma House! Here are the details. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Available 1/18/22. Rent is $1140.

We are an intentional group house centered around meditation and yoga, as well as laughter, and good food. Each of us has an ongoing daily practice, with buddhist vipassana meditation and yoga strongly represented.

Living in a community like the Lamont Dharma House is a unique opportunity to bring your meditation and/or yoga practice to the center of your life, and to explore how the community can support your practice in powerful ways.

Who are we?

We are an evenly balanced group of women and men of varying ages and backgrounds. At play, we can be found adventuring in nature, meditating, doing yoga, playing music and making art, riding bikes, reading, writing, cooking creative healthy food, traveling the world, exploring the city, and hosting dinners.

We each have our own spiritual practice and are here because we want to live in a community where we can deepen that practice. Our spiritual beliefs are diverse, but vipassana meditation and yoga are strongly represented.

Who are you?

We are seeking a new housemate who has an established spiritual practice and wants to deepen that practice in community with others. You should also be fun and respectful to live with as we all explore how to integrate spirituality into daily life in this wild, beautiful, challenging city.

You will be one of six housemates, all who are dedicated to deepening their spiritual practice in the community. Before the pandemic, the Dharma House would invite teachers into our home to hold classes and special events in yoga, meditation, dharma discussion and more. We have moved some of the programming to a virtual setting and are exploring how best to evolve our community engagement in new ways.

You should be willing to contribute time and emotional and spiritual energy to the house because you, like us, feel that this community-building work is well worth the rewards. That said, like most people in DC, we are busy professionals who balance all of this with demanding professional and personal lives. We are not a commune that's going to ask you to sign over your first-born child. But we do require more time and energy than a typical group house.

Our community is LGBTQ friendly and we encourage people from a broad range of backgrounds to apply.

Our space

Our 3-story townhouse is divided between a meditation and yoga space on the first floor and private living space - bedrooms, kitchen, living/dining room, washer/dryer - on the second and third floors. There is also a backyard with a beautiful garden and a firepit, a shaded deck off the second floor, and a basement for storage. There are 5 total long-term residents, and 1 shorter term resident, and 3.5 bathrooms

The house is located in the heart of Mt Pleasant, next to a seasonal farmer's market as well as many restaurants and cafes in Mt Pleasant. A number of bus lines (43, 43, S2, S4) pick up within a block from the house. Rock Creek Park is nearby. Columbia Heights Metro is about a 10-minute walk.

Rent is $1140 plus about $50-100 for shared expenses. The room is about 182.9 sqft.

If you're interested, please send us an email at lamontdharma@gmail.com. Here are some things we'd be interested to know...

Please tell us a bit about yourself, including:

(1) What is your spiritual practice? What do you do for fun and work?

(2) Tell us why you are interested in being a part of the Lamont Dharma House.

(3) Tell us your experiences living in community: have you lived in community before?

(4) What were the challenges and what did you enjoy? If you haven't lived in a community before, what is calling you to it now?

(5) What, if any, engagement have you had with our house? If you were to move in, what activities and responsibilities would you be most interested in participating in or leading?

For details and pictures, please see the house opening web page here.

We look forward to hearing from you! Metta

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Tomorrow Evening with Downtown Dharma - Relating to Difficult Emotions

Greetings Dear Sangha,
One of my formative teachers in the Dharma was Cheri Maples, a police-officer turned Plum Village nun who went on to teach in both Zen and Insight centers. Once after hearing my practice report on having arrived at a refined state of concentration, she shared that she was unimpressed by such achievements. I was taken aback. She went on to say that she was far more interested in me developing the ability to transform a painful emotion, to employ the practice to subvert harm and free my mind from even the most mundane state of suffering. This, she said, was the heart of the Buddha's teaching: a path to end suffering, not just for the benefit of my life but for the benefit of everyone in my life. More than ten years later, her teaching still rings like a bell in my heart and I'm so grateful for this redirection.
This Sunday, we'll explore the practice of relating to difficult emotions, the heart and mind in distress, as both a highly practical skill and as a gateway into profound insight.
We will gather this evening from 7:00-8:30 PM both in person at the Yoga District studio at 1910 14th St. NW and online. Details are at the bottom of this email. If you plan to join in person, please especially take note of the need to register ahead of time through the Yoga District website.

I hope to see you there!

Kristin

Attending In Person
If you would like to come in person, you will need to register with the studio and submit proof of vaccination. You will also need to wear a mask. For everyone's safety and for the viability of this offering, these requirements are not negotiable. You can register through the Yoga District scheduling site, and you can submit proof of vaccination to yog...@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio. We ask everyone to register and submit proof of vaccination ahead of time so that we don't have long delays when we all get together.

We also ask that you try to come 10 minutes early – around 6:50. This will give us time to check folks in and acclimate to what is still a new space and process for most of us. Please note that the class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs. There are rugs, bolsters, and folding chairs for seating. Please also note that we will be staffing these events ourselves so there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers. The doors will be closed and locked at 7:10 and no one will be admitted after that.

Happy Holidays from Mission of Love Charities ❤️

A Holiday Message from the

Mission of Love Charities CEO

Dear Colleague and Supporter of Mission of Love Charities:

In this holiday season of our 30th year, the Mission of Love Charities continues in its commitment to serve the most vulnerable people of the community. Our mission has always been to serve homeless and low-income families and individuals, but with the severe impact of the COVID pandemic, the number of people who rely on the Mission for assistance with food, rent, utilities, health and other basic needs has increased tenfold. Indeed, most months more than a 1,000 people have received food, housing, referral assistance at the Mission.

One of the most pressing issues facing our clients is food insecurity and Mission of Love Charities seeks to provide those affected with food and supplies that will help them during this difficult time. Additionally, many are faced with the possibility of eviction and homelessness because they do not have money to pay the rent or the utilities.  With the help of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) funds from the federal and state governments, we have been able to help nearly 1,000 families and individuals over the last year, who didn’t have the money to pay the rent, remain in their homes.

A strategic priority for the future of Mission of Love Charities is developing its Workforce Development, Education and Job Training Program. Many of our clients who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic may not ever get their jobs back and providing them with the training to get back on their feet economically is perhaps the best long-term solution to their situation.

Our Workforce Development program provides specific job training to become a Certified Nurse Assistant or Geriatric Nurse Assistant, a Meetings Planner, or an OSHA Construction Inspector as well as enhancing skillsets for basic computer skills, financial literacy, oral and written communication, professional goal setting and how to dress for success. We are also excited to announce the launch of the Cisco Networking Academy in early 2022. This program will focus on teaching coding skills to returning citizens between the ages of 18-27.

The need from the community is great and the demand for these training programs is high—most generate long waiting lists as soon as they are announced. As our robust enrollment can attest, the Mission of Love Charities workforce development programs are popular with our clients and have a positive reputation with area companies. As most, if not all, of the graduates of these programs have gone on to secure full-time and part-time jobs in their new field.

While all of these programs and services continue to contribute to the Mission, a major goal to raise the funds needed to renovate, rebuild and repurpose the abandoned school building across the street from our current facility. This building is the former Lyndon Hill Elementary School, which the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County has leased to the Mission for $1/year. The multi-million dollar renovation of the building is projected to start in 2022.

The new building promises to provide larger, improved and better equipped space that can accommodate several new and expanded programs that serve the needs of homeless and low-income community. Raising money and finding the financial resources to support the completion of the new building is central to the operations of the Mission.

We look to our friends, stakeholders and past and prospective donors to help us with this effort.

Think about the vital, important work of the Mission of Love Charities this holiday season when you sit down to write your year-end donations. We ask that you be as generous as possible. And we promise that your contribution will be applied with the utmost care and scrupulous attention to responsible financial management. The return on your investment will be something we can all be proud of.

Thanks to all of you for your support.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Deborah Martinez

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Meditation Retreat Jan 21st - Jan 24th

Hi Downtown Dharma Fam!

I hope you are all doing well and having a nice week.

I am reaching out because I am co-organizing a meditation retreat in January, and I am inviting you to register! The retreat is sponsored by the nonprofit Dharma Gates and will be led by a wonderful Dharma teacher named Ayya Dhammadīpā. Ayya is a 'dual-lineage' teacher, ordained in both the Theravada and Soto Zen lineages.

The retreat will be 4-days // 3-nights and will take place from the evening of Friday, Jan 21st - midday Monday Jan 24th. The location is a 90 min drive from DC at a retreat center called Claymont Society (note: there will be ride-shares + a free shuttle provided). The retreat is intended for folks ages 18-35. That said, if you are older than that and would like to attend, please email me and we will probably be able to work something out 🙂

Other questions you might have:
  • Do I need to have meditation retreat experience? Definitely not! For some of the attendees, it will be their first retreat experience.
  • What is the daily schedule like? Please click here and scroll down to see the schedule for the retreat
  • What does it cost? The retreat is run on a donation basis in the spirit of dana, so there is no required attendance fee. You will be asked to give a deposit in order to register, which will be refunded once you arrive at the retreat. At the end of the retreat, you will be invited to give a donation if you would like to.
  • What about dietary needs? The food served at the retreat will be 100% vegan. If you have specific allergies or requests, you will be able to submit those to the retreat center ahead of time. You are welcome to bring personal food items if you need to -- there will be a fridge and personal food storage.
  • What is the theme or focus for the retreat? The teacher, Ayya Dhammadipa, has chosen the framework of the five aggregates - the body and four aspects of mind as they are described in the teachings of early Buddhism.
I hope you will think about signing up! Here is a link to the registration page on our website with more information and the registration form. If you're a TikTok fan, or if you're not, the teacher Ayya Dhammadipa recorded a TikTok video to invite people which you should watch!

We are working hard to spread the word about this retreat to anyone who might be interested in registering and attending. So, if you want to pass the word along to any friends or other communities you know of that might be interested, please share! There's a blurb at the bottom of this email that you can forward along.

And of course, if you have any questions at all about this retreat, please do not hesitate to reach out.

With gratitude,
B.I.

P.S. Fellow Downtown Dharma sangha member Vince Lampone will be a retreat manager with me for this retreat... in case that provides extra incentive for you to register 😉

"Dharma Gates is partnering with meditation teacher Ayya Dhammadīpā to host a 4-day meditation retreat from Friday January 21st - Monday January 24th. This retreat is intended for young adults ages 18 -35. The retreat is run on a donation basis in the spirit of the Buddhist practice of dana, so there is no required attendance fee or cost. At the end of the retreat, you will be invited to give a donation if you would like to. For many participating, it will be their first meditation retreat. This silent retreat will include periods of guided sitting meditation, walking meditation, Dharma talks, and chanting. It will take place a 90 min drive from DC at a retreat center called Claymont Society. There will be free ride-shares and a shuttle provided for anyone not able to drive. Please click here to learn more and register! If you have any questions, please email benjamin@dharma-gates.org"

Hello all,

Thanks again to all who attended my engaged dharma talk last Sunday, "Eating with Conscience as a Spiritual Path."

I have attached the Vegan Sangha Resources handout for your continued learning and support.

Also, if you want to learn more about the Vegan Sangha and possibly attend, please email me and let me know. You don't have to be vegan to attend...just being interested is enough.

Best wishes,
Ali
