[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Gathering this Sunday

Dear friends,

At times I find myself wondering, do we really know who the Buddha was and what he taught? I wonder if the texts, with all of the shifts and distortions over the years, still point in the right direction. I think about modern day teachers and ask myself if they really know where the path leads or if they are wandering in the dark, possibly with less than noble motives.

Thoughts like these are a natural part of the process and doubt can often lead to a deeper faith and understanding of the dhamma, when we name it and work with it properly.

This will be the topic of this Sunday's class. We will meet online from 7:00-8:30 PM to meditate, connect, and explore the dhamma. The link is below. I look forward to seeing you.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Know anyone looking for a therapist?

Hi dharma friends,

I'll soon be taking on some internship hours at a local therapy practice. I'll be offering low-cost ($40 a session!) online talk therapy in the evenings during the week. I need help getting clients!

Do you know anyone in Maryland or D.C. looking for a therapist? I use mindfulness and specialize in anxiety, burnout, career questions/transitions, relationship/intimacy issues, creative/artistic blocks, and men's issues. Tell them to email me at jeremy@jeremymohler.blog.

Thanks!

Jeremy

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Tonight at 7: Unbinding the Knot of Suffering

Greetings Dear Community,

In tonight's gathering of Downtown Dharma, we'll be returning to one of the most fundamental teachings, the core of mindfulness and the Dharma, the understanding of suffering. Distinct from outward events, even tragic ones, suffering arises as a complex state afflicting our hearts, minds and bodies. We'll take a fresh look at the Buudhas radical response to this universal human phenomenon.

As usual, we'll begin with a period of sitting together, and after the dharma talk, share in community conversation. Zoom details follow below. I look forward to being with you.

Thank you for your practice,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Fwd: IMCW All-Sangha Picnic - POSTPONED

Dear friends,

Please see the message below from IMCW Executive Director Trisha Stotler about the cancellation of the picnic. I am sorry that we will not be able to experience this opportunity to gather as a community, and, of course, sitting with uncertainty, loss and the pain of attachment is what we're all here to do in the first place ;)

With love,

Devin

Dear friends,

Sadly, we've decided to postpone the All-Sangha Picnic on August 29th due to uncertainties around the fast-moving COVID variant situation. Our hope is to reschedule this event in the Spring and will keep you apprised of a new date.

Fear not, we've still got all the equipment for a "just let go" tug-o-war, sack races and corn hole, so at least this gives you time to practice!

In sangha,

🙏🏼

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Saturday August 21 -- Reading Group -- Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators

Hi all,

We'll be meeting for the third and final time to discuss  Emptiness: A Practical Guide for Meditators by Guy Armstrong on Saturday, August 21 at 6pm. We'll be discussing Part II (Phenomena) and Part III (Awareness). Personally, I've deeply enjoyed reading this book and have felt it have a fruitful impact on my practice. The discussions at the first two meetings have been free-ranging and (in my opinion) some of the most insightful since we started this book club almost 2 years ago. I'm really looking forward to finishing it out! There is no pressure to have read the book or have attended the previous two sessions in order to participate.

Please email me at lukehorvathnd@gmail.com if you'd like to RSVP so that I know how many chairs to arrange.

Meeting Information:
We will be doing a combined in-person/Zoom meeting this time. We ask that participants only come in person if they have been fully vaccinated.

August, 21 6:00-7:30 pm

Address: Luke Horvath's house. 1039 Quebec Pl NW, Washington, DC 20010

With love! I hope you all have good weeks!
