[dcphp-dev] [job] PHP Developer

Hi All,

Just FYI we're looking to add a developer to our team.  Even if you're not sure you're interested I'd be happy to talk to you about it..  You can find out more information from the link below.  The post is geared towards someone with just a few years experience but we'd love to talk to more senior developers.  We have the flexibility to tune the position to the individual.

You're welcome to reach out to me directly with questions.

Thanks,
Steve

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] walk out basement for mindful housemate in CP or Silver Spring area

Hi All,

I am working govie looking to move by the end of Aug and am putting out feelers for 2 scenarios.

A.) If someone knows of coming availability of a walkout basement apt in the College Park/Northern Silver Spring (pref along the NH corridor) area. Can you let me know?

B.) Consider extending the intentional community concept of Lamont House, but to the outer 'burbs' of DC with no more than 2 others in a house (this may be of particular interest to those with a green thumb and want more green than what downtown DC provides).

I work in College Park so I'm trying to keep my commute to no longer than 10-15 minutes.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Potter's House Sitting Tonight

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. We will meet tonight from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Rd NW.

We will continue our exploration of the hindrances this week by asking a question: when does it feel OK to be by ourselves, with nobody else around? Drawing from suttas in the Pali canon and our collective experiences, we will get to know the hindrances and the freedom that can arise when they subside.

Chairs are available. You're also welcome to bring a cushion. If you'd like to help set-up, please arrive ten minutes early. The space is wheelchair accessible.

Love and blessings,

Devin

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Readings on Compassion with Borders

Thank you all SO much for your feedback! If you have more suggestions, please keep them coming!

Sam,

Perhaps I should have used the word 'boundaries' rather than 'borders', but I can try to explain it with a link and explanation someone else on this chain forwarded me:

"Here's an article that touches on why being compassionate does not equal not having boundaries. Often, boundaries are absolutely necessary in order to feel safe enough to have compassion for another.

Of course, we may not always be in a situation where we're able to enact the sort of boundaries we'd like. I think it's still important to be clear in ourselves what we want, though, and this makes it more likely."

Some other articles I liked on the subject were these :

I'm interested in exploring my own boundaries more and cultivating how to accept, embrace and trust them.

Also, I liked your breakdown on acceptance, that if we don't respond to negative things with acceptance, it's pretty much a lose-lose situation.

Again, thank you all so much.

Peace,

Natalia

Hey Natalia,

I second the Tara Brach talks, and I also recommend Danielle LaPorte's new podcast. I like her no BS down-to-earthness. The episode "the upside of suffering" seems great for what you're looking for.

Hi Natalia,

I like the Zencast podcast, which mostly features stuff by Gil Fronsdal, a Buddhist teacher based out of San Francisco. The podcast isn't active anymore but you can find it online here: http://www.zencast.org/

Re: [Downtown Dharma Listserve] Readings on Compassion with Borders

Natalia,

What's compassion with borders?

In terms of acceptance/letting go I don't know of any podcasts but I read books and listen to Dharma talks. I imagine there must be some by Tara Brach.

In case you're interested, In brief, here's what I think about on acceptance/letting go.

They are the same. Two sides of the same coin, so to speak.

As a practical example:

I prefer summer over winter.

I HATE puttin' on extra layers of clothes.

When winter rolls around, a skillful and appropriate response to the cold would be to ACCEPT the fact that it's now winter and put on those extra layers of clothes on to keep me warm.
It's in that ACCEPTANCE that the LETTING GO of my idea of "I HATE puttin' on extra layers of clothes" happens.

If I don't respond to winter in a skillful and appropriate manner by not ACCEPTING and LETTING GO  then I either never leave my apartment all winter or I don't put on the extra clothing and go outside and be cold.

Thank's for your question.

It gave me an opportunity to think about my practice.

Best Regards,

Sam
