[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Interested in reading group next month? (May)

Hi all,

Downtown Dharma typically has a meditation/Buddhist-themed reading group and vegetarian potluck every month. This is a wonderful chance to deepen connections and explore ideas outside the Sunday sits.

Recent topics have included navigating life's challenges, anxiety, bodhisattvas, nonviolent communication, and eco-Buddhism. Future topics could be whatever you want!

For a reading group to happen:
  • Someone needs to volunteer to host a group of ~10 people for a talk and vegetarian potluck, at a location centrally located in DC;
  • and someone (could be the same or a different person) needs to volunteer to facilitate the group.
    • Facilitating involves choosing reading(s) (could be a book, article, video, podcast, etc.) and leading a discussion.
If either (or both) of these sound like something you'd like to do next month (May), please let me know!

Kindly,
-Megan

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] 📖 Seeking Volunteer Coordinator - DD Reading Group

Hi all,

Due to my schedule, I need to step down as the volunteer coordinator for the Downtown Dharma reading group. If you might want to take over, please reach out!

The reading group (a.k.a. book club) is a ~monthly gathering to discuss books, articles, movies, podcasts, or really any media, from a mindfulness/Buddhist perspective. It's a wonderful part of our community!

The volunteer coordinator role is essential to running this group. To make things smoother, I have created a detailed volunteer coordinator guide to walk you through every step of coordinating a monthly meeting.

Please let me know if this role might appeal to you! I'd be happy to talk more.

With metta,
Ava

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] May 23 - Mindfully Responding to Dangerous Times

Hi all,

On Friday 5/23 at 7:30pm at Yoga District on 14th, I will be leading an in-person talk. (This is rescheduled from a Downtown Dharma Sunday talk I had to cancel earlier.)

My talk is titled "Mindfully Responding to Dangerous Times."

This will be a meditation and talk/discussion informed by Buddhist thought. We will consider how, when we are under attack, we might think about principles and ethics of self-defense and defense of others. The talk will draw on teachings by the Dalai Lama, Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, Lama Rod Owens, Sharon Salzberg, and others. All are welcome.
  • In-person at Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC
    • Please sign up in advance on Yoga District's website
    • Please arrive 5-10 minutes early
I look forward to seeing you there.

With metta,
Ava

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Social Dance as Meditation

Dear Friends,

Do you have a hobby or routine that brings you into the moment? Have you ever felt fully present riding your bike, making a meal, or listening to music?

This Sunday will be experimental and all about bringing mindfulness to activities we love. Together, we'll explore social dancing, specifically swing dancing, as a form of individual and relational meditation.

The evening will include:

  • Being in the body - Finding rhythm and inspiration from music.
  • Listening - Attuning to our bodies, layers in music, and a fellow dancer.
  • Connection - Practicing being present and nonverbal communication.
Note: No dance experience is required :) Our goal is not to learn how to swing dance but instead to tap into dance as a mindfulness practice.

If you're joining in person, please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to avoid the check-in line and help us begin on time with ease.

Warmly,
Audrey

To: <mindful-fed@listserv.gsa.gov>

Hey all,

For tomorrow's session, we'll slow down and explore the practice of staying—being with the thoughts, emotions, and restlessness that often make us want to check out or move on.

>> Join us: Wednesday at 1:30pm ET / 11:30am MT / 10:30am PT on Zoom <<

Many of us in government are moving through a time of dislocation. Colleagues are leaving—some by choice, some not, and others making a choice that doesn't quite feel like one. For those who remain, it can stir sadness, guilt, and the quiet question: Should I stay?

It's the same question that shows up in meditation—and in our work lives, too. Stay with the breath when the monkey mind kicks in. Stay in a hard conversation with a boss or direct report. Stay with a project even as the goalposts shift.

This session isn't about offering answers or urging anyone to stay or go. It's about making space to notice what's present, sit with it, and practice staying—together—even if just for a few minutes or a couple breaths.

We'll begin with open discussion, then move into a guided meditation, followed by a shared experiment. 🌅

Be well,
Alex and the Mindful Fed Team

PS: For too long we've been east coast centric in time zones–sorry!!🫣–but no longer! #Timeshavechanged

PSS: A poem, especially for those who can't join us:

"Wild Geese" by Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Jude,
I definitely will send you a few of the poems that I wrote when I was with you on the haiku walks. It's a super busy time for me, but I promise you I will do it! I so appreciate haiku hikes and I can't wait for the next one, thank you for what you do!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Feeling the Pull: What Draws Us In and Pushes Us Away

Dear friends,

This Sunday is our monthly Insight Dialogue evening, and Ben Lasso will be guiding us in practice. This week's theme is:

Feeling the Pull: What Draws Us In and Pushes Us Away

Together, we'll slow down and bring mindful awareness to the senses, noticing how we're drawn toward some experiences and pushed away from others. These subtle tones of pleasant or unpleasant shape our reactions powerfully, often before we even realize it.

The evening will include both silent meditation and mindful dialogue in pairs. No experience is necessary—just a spirit of curiosity and kindness.

If you're joining in person, please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to avoid the check-in line and help us begin on time with ease.

With love,
Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Sunday at Downtown Dharma: Grounding Ourselves with "Don't Know Mind"

Dear beloved sangha,

With all that is going on today today, we want to offer our energy and compassion tthe world, but may be unclear on how best to help.  This Sunday, we'll explore together the zen practice of "don't know mind." Living the mystery of "don't know mind" grounds us to fearlessly respond to our suffering and that of the world with wisdom and compassion.

We'll start with a meet-each-other icebreaker, meditate together, I'll give a short talk, and we'll do break-out groups.

This is a wonderful opportunity to gather in spiritual community and make new friends. Come join us!

🙏🏻♥️

Mark

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Spots open! TOMORROW: Sangha Activity - Sakura Haiku Walk | April 12

Friday rain showers
bring bright Sunday blossoms
but pleasewear good boots

Happy rainy Friday, everyone! This is a reminder that tomorrow at 1pm is our Sakura Haiku Walk through the late-season cherry blossoms in the National Arboretum. We have had some spots open up, so please RSVP via Partiful or email me if you are interested in attending. If you signed up and are no longer able to attend, please update your RSVP ASAP.

Further details on our route are below. We should have some very spring-y cloudy weather after all this rain, so please bundle up and prepare for some potential mud. Let me know if you have any questions!

Best,
Jude

Hello!

It's spring! Why not take a deep breath, get together with some sangha pals, and write haiku about delicate little cherry blossoms?

What: Please join us for our Spring 2025 Sakura Haiku Walk at the US National Arboretum! Among the cherry blossoms, participants will receive a brief lesson on how to write haiku and then practice writing and sharing haiku with each other. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment. Find examples of famous haiku here.)

When: Saturday, April 12, 1-3pm (I will inform the sangha listserv and RSVP'd participants at least 24 hours in advance if the event will be canceled due to inclement weather.)

Where: We will meet at 1pm near the Holly & Magnolia Parking Lot at the US National Arboretum and walk to the Flowering Trees Collection. Later, we will walk to the Asian Collections and eventually back to the parking lot. See the tentative route at the bottom of this email.

Who: Please RSVP via Partiful. If you can't/don't want to use Partiful, please email me directly to reserve your spot. Spaces are first-come-first-serve and limited to not overwhelm the Arboretum during its busy season. Can't come anymore? Please update your RSVP, so we can pull from the waitlist! This event is best suited for people who feel comfortable walking on uneven terrain for a total of about 1.5 miles.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku, and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring a pen and a notebook/paper.

Why: While haiku is not a strictly Buddhist form of poetry, haiku and Zen are closely linked historically and thematically. Haiku relies on the senses and encourages contemplation of the present moment, so both new and experienced meditators may enjoy practicing haiku as a way to engage with mindfulness.

<3 Jude

Route: We will be meeting in the Holly & Magnolia Parking Lot (1), walking to the Flowering Trees Collection (2) for a haiku lesson, and then moving to the Asia Collections (3) before heading back to the parking lot (1).

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] This Evening: The Underground River

Greetings Dear Sangha,

A central power of mindfulness, of the Dharma, is in the practical support for self-regulation, for gathering our wits, settling our minds, and moving forward with more clarity. Yet in these teachings, so much more, even in terms of clarity, is on offer. For this moment of collective instability and breakdown, the Dharma can point us to the steady, the unshakable within our own heart-minds. This underground river of wisdom is always within us. How we come to know that truth for ourselves and rely upon it is through making our way to and drinking from this river again and again.

This Sunday, we'll explore in community a practice for accessing that within us that is not disoriented and can instead point the way. I hope you will join us.

One practical note: if you're joining us in person, know that the line to check in can be long so please arrive at least 10 minutes early. There are plenty of friends to make while you're waiting for the formal program to begin!

In-person: Sunday, 7 to 8:30pm @ Yoga District — 1910 14th Street NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC

In Sangha,

Kristin
