[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Inauguration Day / MLK Day retreat

Reminder of this!

--------

Hi all

I just signed up for this, you may be interested. I know all the teachers and they're excellent. Scholarships and transportation are available.

An Inauguration Day Retreat for All People

Ayesha Ali, Em Morrison and Silvia Garcia-Pereira

Monday, Jan 20, 09:30 AM - 04:00 PM in MD > Bethesda

Please join us for this Inauguration Day daylong retreat, an opportunity to come together in sangha as we ground in our Buddhist principles of mindful awareness, courageous and wise speech, non-harming, and compassion in action. The day will consist of both silent and interactive practices that support opening to our own experience of what is, cultivating resilience, and wisdom for responding to the uncertainties that lie ahead. We will also draw on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who lived these same principles and whose national holiday is also observed on this day.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sat. 1/4/2025: Winter Yoga Workshop for Kids!

Hi all!

Jackie Powell and I are hosting a Kid's Winter Yoga Workshop on Saturday, January 4 from 2:00-3:30pm at the Bloomingdale Yoga District located at 1830 First Street NW in DC. All children between 6-8 years old are welcome! Lots of street parking for those coming from further out.

About this workshop: Practicing yoga and mindfulness during childhood can create a powerful sense of self-awareness, confidence, playfulness, and can be a great tool for self-soothing. Together, we will make new friends while practicing yoga postures and mindfulness techniques through movement, song, games, and stories. Bring a playful spirit, no yoga experience required. Caretakers are encouraged to drop their child off for the workshop.

Learn more and register here! Appreciate any forwards to any listservs, parent groups, school groups, friends, etc. If this one is successful there will be more!

See attached flyer. Please feel free to reach out with any questions:

Best,
Steph & Jackie

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] See you today at Downtown Dharma!

---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: Em Morrison <em.f.morrison@gmail.com>
Subject: See you Sunday at Downtown Dharma!

Dear Downtown Dharma friends,

It's been over a year since I visited to teach at Downtown Dharma and I'm thrilled to be joining you again this weekend.

This Sunday we'll be practicing with the an incredibly powerful teaching from the Upajjhatthana Sutta - on the five remembrances. This teaching from the Buddha calls us to remember what is true in this life so that we, in the words of the Zen chant, "do not squander our lives" believing that we can beat aging, illness, death, or karma :) Maybe it sounds depressing....but I find it liberating.

We'll do introductions, sit in meditation, I'll give a talk, and we'll gather in small groups to connect to the dharma together.

We hope to see you there—in-person or online. Come join us!

Warmly,

Em Morrison

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Mindful Eating Meditation

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow evening at Downtown Dharma, Gauri and I are excited to share a Mindful Eating Meditation with the sangha. We will be using our five senses to meditate on a raisin and a blackberry. Eating is only part of the experience and is not required to participate.

After initial announcements and a short guided sit, we will introduce and facilitate two mindful eating experiences. There will be opportunities to share experiences in small groups and as a larger group at the end. We will conclude with a brief loving kindness meditation and community announcements.

You can join online or in person:
See you soon!

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] PSA: DC Haiku Contest + Free Workshop!

Hello,

Just a quick PSA for those who have attended or been interested in our haiku events: DC's internationally recognized Golden Triangle Haiku Contest has opened for submissions through January 19! See guidelines and prizes here (fortunately for us, there's a special regional category): Golden Haiku Poetry Competition - Golden Triangle

Even better--as part of the effort, the Japan-America Society is hosting a free haiku writing workshop on January 15: Golden Haiku Workshop 2025 Tickets, Wed, Jan 15, 2025 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite

Registration is required to save a spot. It's a wonderful and rare opportunity to learn more about haiku from people who actually know what they're talking about ;)

And if one of our own Downtown Dharma poets makes it to a Golden Triangle sign, please let me know, so we can celebrate!

The snow and snow--

this evening would have been

the great moon of December

To: IMCW Downtown Dharma social/volunteer listserv <downtowndharma@googlegroups.com>
Cc: Anushi Garg <anushigarg.19@gmail.com>

Hello!

Looking for something positive and relaxing to look forward to? As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, there is still so much beautiful nature to experience. We are excited to continue this informal Downtown Dharma haiku series with an autumnal hike through Rock Creek 😊

What: Please join us for our Fall Contemplative Haiku Hike through Rock Creek Park! Participants will learn how haiku relate to mindfulness and Zen Buddhism and receive brief instructions on how to write haiku. We will then take a mindful 2-mile hike, taking breaks to write our own haiku about the nature we observe. (Haiku are short, accessible poems that typically evoke nature and contemplation of the present moment. Find examples of famous haiku here.)

When: Saturday, November 30, Noon-4pm (We will inform the sangha listserv and RSVP'd participants at least 24 hours in advance if the event will be canceled due to inclement weather.)

Where: We will meet at Noon at Saku Saku Flakerie in Cleveland Park. Then, we will hike approximately 2.3 miles on Reservation 630 Trail to a cafe in Mount Pleasant. See the tentative route at the bottom of this email.

Who: Please RSVP at this sign-up sheet. All are welcome! While our pace will be slow and steady, this event is best suited for people who feel comfortable hiking more than 2 miles on park trails that are uneven and have some inclines and declines.

How: No experience necessary! We will go over simple instructions on how to write haiku. Paper and a handout on haiku will be provided. Please bring your own pen and a notebook if possible, as well as $$ for drinks or snacks at Saku Saku Flakerie and Dos Gringos Cafe.

Why: While haiku is not a strictly Buddhist form of poetry, haiku and Zen are closely linked historically and thematically. Haiku relies on the senses and encourages contemplation of the present moment, so both new and experienced meditators may enjoy practicing haiku as a way to engage with mindfulness. See additional resources at the bottom of this email for more info.

Questions? Please email Judy (lavelle@bu.edu) and Anushi (anushigarg.19@gmail.com).

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow: Effort, Lovingkindness, and the Protection of the Mind

Dear friends,

Tomorrow evening at Downtown Dharma, I'm excited to share with you the Buddha's foundational teaching on Right Effort. (For anyone wanting a preview, the Sutta is here!)

In particular, we'll look at how practices such as the cultivation of lovingkindness (metta) can protect our precious minds from being overtaken by anger, addiction, despair, and other forms of suffering and struggle.

I will offer a lovingkindness meditation, and a talk on the four different kinds of Right Effort that the Buddha taught. We will have the chance to share in small groups about how we might bring all four aspects of Right Effort into our daily practices.

You can join online or in person:

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Downtown Dharma Stream Cleanup Event

Hello Downtown Dharma,

My name is Nick Staten, I am new to the sangha and looking forward to getting to know all of you!

In an effort to create community outside of Yoga District I wanted to host a stream cleanup event where we could all serve our watershed, it takes care of us in so many ways so why don't we return the favor! I usually cleanup at the mouth of the Rock Creek Watershed at P St. Beach which is right where the 33 mile long watershed drains into the Potomac River (an ideal area to collect trash before it heads out to the ocean!).

The event will be on Sunday January 12th from 1pm-3pm. Hopefully it won't be too cold, unfortunately litter doesn't hibernate! If you are interested, signup using this link: https://secure.everyaction.com/KTUGv4RZw0CkxF3BXl0-Rw2

This will be an official NPS / Rock Creek Conservancy event, but it will just be open to members of our sangha.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions! I'll attach some photos from my last event.

All my best,
Nick

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Relaxation: A Meditative Exploration (in silence and in relationship)

Hi friends,

Relaxation is a core part of the Buddhist path to awakening. Yet it can sometimes feel elusive, particularly in our relational lives.

This Sunday, we'll explore the theme of relaxation through a mix of silent meditation and Insight Dialogue—letting go of tension as best we can, and orienting towards ease and acceptance.

Nick Menxies and I will co-facilitate this week. No prior Insight Dialogue experience needed, just your presence and openness to listening deeply and speaking with intention.

We hope to see you there—online or in person!
-Vince

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] an invitation to join Devin Maroney + me on retreat in March

I'm very happy to let you all know that Devin Maroney and I are teaching a retreat together -- Arriving Home through Mindfulness of the Body -- at Seven Oaks in Madison, VA, March 6-9. Registration just opened today: https://imcw.org/event/?eventId=1592

Mindfulness of body is an infinitely rich exploration, and foundational to practice. In this retreat, Devin and I will weave together our reverence for traditional silent retreat with our wide-ranging experience as therapists who bring meditation into the work of embodied healing. The schedule will include guided and silent practice, Dharma talks, group interviews, and time to be present in nature as we touch the beginnings of spring.

Devin and I first met as classmates in graduate school for social work. There, we bonded over our shared love of Dharma practice, while immersing ourselves in Western psychological teachings. (Many Sunday nights during grad school, Devin was teaching at Downtown Dharma!) Since then, we have remained friends and colleagues. On my breaks from training at the monastery, I almost always drove across town to visit Devin and talk about life and practice. I'm thrilled that we will serve together as a teaching team for the first time.

As many of you know, silent retreat can be an experience of profound challenge and profound beauty. When I consider my many months spent on retreat, I don't regret a single day -- and I feel such gratitude.

We'd be very glad to practice with many of you there in March. Please feel free to reach out to either of us with questions.

Warmly,
Dechen // Ellen
