Dear Members of the Community and Friends of Mission of Love Charities,

Mission of Love Charities, which is located in the middle of some of the most food insecurity in the metro Washington area, every day is providing homeless and very low-income individuals, families and children with the basics of food, financial assistance for rent and job training.

In fact, since 1991, the Mission has served these needy people in our community. Indeed, with the pandemic of the recent years and the dramatic negative economic impact of that problem, the number of people who find themselves in need of the basics of life – food, housing and job training – has steadily increased.

All of the people served by Mission of Love Charities are qualified to have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty low-income guideline. These are people in need. Because they have nowhere else to go, they come to the Mission for food, clothing, financial assistance for housing, job training, and physical and mental health assistance. The Mission is able to provide these services because of the generosity of support from individuals, foundations and government agencies. But the need continues, and the Mission continues to aggressively market itself to prospective financial supporters, without whom the Mission would not be able to operate.

While providing these basic needs to homeless and very low-income individuals, families and children is a priority for the Mission, the organization is pressing ahead with plans to develop, renovate and rebuild the old school building across the street to become the Mission’s new facility – in order to enhance and develop the capabilities of the Mission to serve the people who depend on it.

The Mission has attracted significant funding to support the design and construction of the new facility. However, it still needs to secure more financial support to complete the project, which has a tentative completion date of late 2024. The prospect of the new and expanded space is giving us all lots of energy and enthusiasm to become able to do so much more for the community. While we are optimistic about securing funding from bond issues and grants, we need and hope to attract further investment and financial support from individuals and charitable organizations in the community. Indeed, there are several opportunities for recognition or naming of the building and rooms in the building to honor donors of significant gifts. Feel free to reach out to us to tour the building and see what’s in the works for the future.

The Mission’s Workforce Development, Education and Job Training programs continue, making a major difference in the lives of the people we serve. Mostly, these are people who were employed before the pandemic hit, but who lost their jobs and will never get their old jobs back. They need and want job training that will help them get back on their feet economically by learning skills for a new job opportunity.

While providing people with basic needs is still a priority, the Mission recognizes that people need to get job training and other education so they can get back to being financially able to sustain their lives and their families. The Mission’s job training and education programs include basic skills, computer training, certification to become a Nursing Assistant, certification to become an OSHA inspector and certification to become a Meetings Planner.

We realize the aftermath of COVID has created numerous issues and one major one is mental health. MOLC has engaged and partnered with a local mental health organization where we now provide a Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our goal is to provide hope.

Another important factor to consider is that more and more older people come to our doors for food and basic needs assistance. The rising costs of living are having a major negative impact on older people, who now find that they need help making it by.

Mission of Love Charities depends on your financial support to make all this happen. If you are able, please consider making a donation.

Best wishes!
