[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Volunteer Opportunity with Insight on the Inside (IOI)

Downtown Dharma Sangha Family;

Carolyn Stachowski from Insight on the Inside (IOI)is reaching out to connect with dedicated practitioners who are interested in deepening their practice through the generosity of volunteering.

IOI shares mindfulness in communities vulnerable to the impact of systemic racism and other forms of oppression with the aspiration to empower through conveying skills of self-liberation. New volunteers are welcomed into a sangha of mutual support and development.

Currently, our need is most significant in the District of Columbia Department of Corrections.

We have classes in an education-focused unit, LEAD UP, Young Men Emerging for 18-25-year-olds, iMen's Wellness, and opioid treatment.

We have been asked to start in the women's units, the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment unit (RSAT), and re-entry. We also have a need for volunteers to help at one of the transitional housing for women who have been unhoused in Anacostia.

Volunteers are asked to commit to about 3 hours of a month minimum, which includes participation in our monthly sangha gathering. We also ask that you have

• a daily sitting practice
• retreat experience or are willing to start one and/or willing to participate in one of our practice and study groups
• a willingness to complete a free online course of study of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
• a desire to engage in community conversations about race, gender, and other forms of oppression
