[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] "Roots Deeper Than Whiteness" Online Anti-Racism Course

Hi dharma friends,

I work with the organization White Awake, which is offering an online anti-racism course for people who identify as white starting October 9, 2022.

I highly recommend this course, as it has helped me grow immensely as a person wanting to be more mindful in my relationships with others, in my neighborhood, and in activist spaces.

It includes mindfulness training with meditation instructor Byron Wild. Emphasis will be placed on mindfulness as a practice for resilience and transformation within the context of collective struggle for an equitable society.

(And, if you happen to be a licensed social worker, it's highly likely that the course will offer CE credits. This is pending approval from the NASW, but we'll know soon.)

Below is the info, but you can click on this link to see more: https://mailchi.mp/whiteawake/roots-deeper-than-whiteness-2022-promo-v2

Roots Deeper Than Whiteness

- building emotional strength & political clarity for collective liberation -

Online Course with White Awake
Facilitators: Eleanor Hancock and David Dean

"If you don't know who you are, society will tell you, and then you are lost."
– Emilio Guerrera

In the current historical moment, with multiple crises coming to a head, white people have a pressing need to connect with our basic humanity and separate ourselves from the status-quo-supporting roles we are socialized and manipulated to play.

Roots Deeper than Whiteness is White Awake's annual foundations course, designed to help white people reject the role we have been groomed to fill and build a healthy sense of self rooted in liberatory knowledge and practice. Many of our other online courses expand on the three essential themes that are covered in the Roots Deeper curriculum: developing emotional resilience and an innate, political wisdom; connecting personal and family stories to a broader historical and political analysis; and familiarization with basic elements of solidarity-based action for positive social change.

This is a good course for white folks at all stages of political development, whether you are new to anti-racism or have years of experience in activism, organizing, and/or working class politics. It is also a great introduction to White Awake's work, and can be a powerful curriculum for group engagement.

The goal of the class is to support your (or your group's) engagement in multiracial, solidarity-based organizing for a world where everyone thrives. In service of this goal, the course offers:

  • A broad political analysis that prioritizes solidarity (i.e., "we are all in this together") and uncovers the centuries-long use of racism as a tool of the most powerful to divide and control the rest of us
  • Historical understanding of the creation of white racial identity, and the opportunity to reflect on what was lost when our families assimilated into it (including the loss of ethnic identity and radical political tradition)
  • Hidden histories of resistance, self-determination and multi-racial movements for social change that we can claim and carry forward
  • Tools to help understand and care for your emotions so that you can respond rather than react in emotionally charged situations
  • Support for creating an action plan to build on the work of this class and personally engage in the work of social change
~✵~

* Because "Roots Deeper than Whiteness" focuses on the legacy and socialization of white identity as it is experienced by people socially categorized as white, live sessions of this course will be held as a white identity caucus. For more information, see our ground rules for live session participation.*

✵CE Credits for Social Workers!✵ This course is pending approval from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for Continuing Education credits. Supplemental processing sessions, facilitated by a LCSW, will be included as part of the Social Work CE credit track. We anticipate approval from NASW before the course begins, and will notify registrants of their decision.
~✵~

✵Supplemental Mindfulness Training✵ with meditation instructor Byron Wild will be offered as an optional component of the course. Emphasis will be placed on mindfulness as a practice for resilience and transformation within the context of collective struggle for an equitable society.

Training consists of two separate meetings between live sessions of the course and half an hour of mindfulness instruction before each live session. All registered participants will be invited to attend.

Live sessions: Oct 9, Oct 23, Nov 6 & Nov 20

4-6:30pm ET (1-3:30pm PT)

Sliding scale $80 - $280 fee for course

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Volunteer Opportunity with Insight on the Inside (IOI)

Downtown Dharma Sangha Family;

Carolyn Stachowski from Insight on the Inside (IOI)is reaching out to connect with dedicated practitioners who are interested in deepening their practice through the generosity of volunteering.
IOI shares mindfulness in communities vulnerable to the impact of systemic racism and other forms of oppression with the aspiration to empower through conveying skills of self-liberation. New volunteers are welcomed into a sangha of mutual support and development.
Currently, our need is most significant in the District of Columbia Department of Corrections.
We have classes in an education-focused unit, LEAD UP, Young Men Emerging for 18-25-year-olds, iMen's Wellness, and opioid treatment.
We have been asked to start in the women's units, the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment unit (RSAT), and re-entry. We also have a need for volunteers to help at one of the transitional housing for women who have been unhoused in Anacostia.
Volunteers are asked to commit to about 3 hours of a month minimum, which includes participation in our monthly sangha gathering. We also ask that you have
  • a daily sitting practice
  • retreat experience or are willing to start one and/or willing to participate in one of our practice and study groups
  • a willingness to complete a free online course of study of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
  • a desire to engage in community conversations about race, gender, and other forms of oppression
You can respond directly to carolynstachowski@gmail.com thank you very much

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Sunday Sept 11 Dharma Gathering

Dear friends,

I hope you're well and enjoying the week's end! Our sangha will meet this Sunday, Sept 11, from 7-8:30pm at Yoga District (1910 14th St. NW). You can also join via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below.

Please note: As we manage not one but two community health challenges, there are additional instructions for in-person attendees below. I hope this doesn't deter anyone who is planning to join us at Yoga District.

Topic: This week, we'll dive into "impermanence," a foundational tenet of Buddhist wisdom. Just like the breath, all that we experience arises and passes away. Yet our mind's tendency is toward clinging, wanting things to stay the same, and not to change. How can we find peace within this tension? Lucky for us, meditation is a training ground for feeling greater ease with life's basic groundlessness, learning to trust the journey and letting go of the destination. There can even be a certain pleasure in this inevitable dissipation, as something new arises to take its place. To whit (to wit?), a joke:

Knock knock
Who's there?
Banana?
Banana who?
Knock knock
Who's there?
Banana?
Banana who?
Knock knock
Who's there?
Orange?
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?
:)

I look forward to practicing with you at Yoga District or online, and wish you all the delicious fruits.

Shawn

Attending In Person

Monkeypox Precautions:

As research into community transmission of the monkeypox virus continues, our generous hosts at Yoga District are implementing additional protocols out of an abundance of caution. Specifically, they ask that all attendees to events at their facilities, including this one, to refrain from direct contact with their equipment, including their cushions and blankets. Therefore,
  • If you have your own cushion, we encourage you to bring it, especially if transport is practical.
  • You can instead bring a small blanket to sit on, or perhaps use the one you bring to handle and position a Yoga District cushion.
  • If you are experiencing any skin issues (lesions, open sores, etc.), please be especially careful in this regard.

Ongoing COVID-19 Precautions:

While the B1A variant continues to pose risk to vulnerable members of our community, in-person attendees need to do the following:

a) Register through the Yoga District sign-up link -- scroll way to the bottom for (14th street) Sunday 7pm.

b) Submit proof of boosted vaccination to yogadc@yogadistrict.com or present it in person at the studio.

c) Wear a mask.

d) Arrive 10 minutes early (6:50 pm) to check-in. (Since we staff these events ourselves, the doors will be locked at 7:10 pm and unfortunately, there will be no one at the desk to admit latecomers.)

We ask everyone to register and submit proof of boosted vaccination ahead of time to avoid delays. Class is held on the 3rd floor, up two flights of stairs.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Living Dharma Group

Hi friends,

The Living Dharma Group will be starting up again in the fall and there are three spaces left. The course will include a weekly discussion group and daily practice instructions. The group will convene from 9:30-10:55 AM on Fridays and it will run from September 16th through December 16th, with no session on the 25th of November. To freshen things up, the daily emails will start with a close reading of some of the suttas and commentary on the eightfold path. If we get through that, we may delve into some other territory. I will continue to offer the group freely, and donations will be accepted from those who would like to give.

Please only sign up if you can commit to making at least 10 of the 13 sessions. If you want to join but aren't sure that you can make it 10 times, let me know and we may be able to work something out depending on the numbers.

With love,

Devin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] An Evening with Downtown Dharma Sangha: From Uneasiness to Present Mindedness: A Journey to Mindful Living.

From Uneasiness to Present Mindedness: A Journey to Mindful Living.

Downtown Dharma Sangha

DATE:  9/4/2022  TIME: 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Location:

  • In-person: 1910 14th Street NW,  3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20009

Facilitators- Travis M. Spencer

Mindful Helper: Elicia Renee Wright

This Sunday's topic and practice will be an opportunity to explore Mindful Living as a way to mitigate daily life stressors. In a heart-centered practice of listening and sharing with one another, We will explore and discuss the four elements of F.L.O.W. and how it supports shifting from Stress-filled days to a life anchored in Mindful Living.  The four elements of F.L.O.W. are as follows:

  • Following your intuition: Being present with your intuitive energy (innate goodness or Buddha nature)

  • Letting go of outcomes and expectations:  Being led by equanimity,  sympathetic joy, loving-kindness, and compassion. Trusting your responsive decisions will yield the best outcomes for yourself and all others.

  • Owning your experience: Unconditionally embracing yourself.  You are not perfect;  You are divine.  Owning your experience empowers you to mitigate victimization of yourself and others and cultivate sustainable joy in your life and community.

  • Welcoming growth edges:  Allow life to be your dharma.  Your awakening, healing, and self-actualizing live within your openness and acceptance of your dharma or life lessons.

During my dharma share, I will explore:

  • I will explore how present-mindedness via F.L.O.W. supports our journey to Mindful Living.

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] Tomorrow Evening at Downtown Dharma: Beyond Fixing (with important instructions for in-person attendees)

Greetings Dear Community,

We will meet this Sunday, August 28 from 7-8:30pm at Yoga District at 1910 14th St. NW. You can also join via Zoom. Details for attending in person and online are below.

Please note: As we manage not one but two community health challenges, there are additional instructions for in-person attendees below. I hope this doesn't deter anyone who is planning to join us at Yoga District.

Topic: Tomorrow evening, after our community sit, we'll explore the subtle and not-so-subtle pressure we might experience to become, to be all we can be. This is suffering, the ever-present signals that convince us we need to be better, less of this and more of that, in order to be okay. What is happening here, and how might the path of wisdom and compassion support us in freeing ourselves from these particularly painful delusions? The alternative includes but goes so much farther than mere self-acceptance.

I look forward to practicing with you at Yoga District or online.

With love and endless blessings,
Kristin

[Downtown Dharma Sangha Listserv] My online men's therapy group has an opening

Hi dharma friends,

My weekly online men's therapy group has an open slot!

My co-leader and I help those who have been socialized as men navigate society's shifting ideas about gender.

We use trauma-informed mindfulness practices and Internal Family Systems (IFS), an evidence-based therapy used for healing trauma. Much of each session is spent sharing and validating each other's experiences related to work, relationships, dating, family, sex, body image, and more. Each member has regular opportunities to get one-on-one attention using the IFS therapy model.

The cost is $100/session and is only open to DC and Maryland residents. Email (jeremy@jeremymohler.blog) or DM me to set up a free 15-minute call and see if you're a good fit to join the group!
