[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Day of Mindfulness for Women of the African Diaspora, Feb 18th, PLEASE FORWARD

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY

Dear ones,
please help spread the word about this
interfaith day of mindfulness for women of African descent to explore healing our relationships. This is a day of growing togetherness and a celebration of all that we are.

with Kaira Jewel Lingo, Gretchen Rohr and Therese Taylor-Stinson (facilitators from Buddhist and contemplative Christian backgrounds)

Date: Feb 18, 2017, 9:00 AM  -  4:00 PM
Location: Westminster Presbyterian Church, DC (Washington)

Here for more information and to register.

Please also forward widely to your circles of women of African Descent.
Thank you!

The Saturday after Valentines' Day, please join an Interfaith gathering of women of African Descent for a daylong retreat on radical healing and conscious loving. Together, we will explore the variety of ways multiracial and black women awaken in relationship with ourselves, with each other, and with intimate partners.

Drawing from contemplative Christian and Buddhist traditions, secular mindfulness practices and indigenous dialogue, the day will provide a sacred space for self-care and building community, for nourishing joy and healing our pain. We will learn and practice tools to identify both systemic and personal barriers to compassionate living, so that we can sustain inner liberation and outer transformation for the long-haul. This is a day of growing togetherness and a celebration of all that we are.

** All are welcome who self-identify as women (including transgendered and cisgendered women) and trace parts of your ancestry to the historic people of Africa.

The facilitators will offer reflections and the following activities: Silent and guided meditation; mindful eating and walking; a group spiritual direction to convenant with one another as sisters; the practice of Beginning Anew, a 4-step process to resolve conflict and strengthen our intimate relationships; and community conferencing circles, a restorative process to reconcile community trauma and injustice.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Meditation Retreat Resources

Dear Sangha,

I recently got back from 10 day retreat at Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts. It was an immeasurable gift. I wanted to send along information on the abundance of options we have for meditation retreats in the insight tradition.

You know about IMCW retreats and the excellent teachers we have so accessible to us in DC:

Nearby in West Virginia, Bhavana Society is a Theravadan monastery that offers retreats on an entirely Dana (donation) basis. It's in a beautiful forested setting. They're very welcoming and practicing with monastics is its own particular blessing.

Insight Meditation Society is in Barre, Massachusetts. A wise friend once told me, if you can make it to IMS, go to IMS. They've been creating a container for practice for 40 years and they do a wonderful job.

In North Carolina there is Southern Dharma Center

If you'll be in California, go to Spirt Rock http://www.spiritrock.org/

if you'll be in England, go to Gaia House http://gaiahouse.co.uk/

I hope that you have the ability to go on retreat in 2017. There are often scholarship options. May your practice continue and be nourished by the teachings that we are so fortunate to have available to us.

Erin

[dcphp-dev] I am Looking for a PHP Mentor

Hi all!

Happy new year! I am looking for a PHP mentor to help me structure/organize my PHP learning. Up until this point, it has been a bunch of googling and reading tutorials that may or may not be up to date. I am on the php-mentoring.org site, but have not had much luck thus far. I also am working on a small personal web application as part of my self-teaching process. My goal is to learn enough PHP so that I can start doing freelance or volunteer development work, and/or contribute to open source projects at a junior developer level.

If you are interested in helping me out, please let me know.

What I am looking for in a mentor:
  • Structure/guidance on what to learn/focus on (foundational PHP concepts, OOP, frameworks, APIs, ??)
  • Help sifting through what is good PHP coding practice vs. what is outdated and/or wrong
  • A Code reviewer
  • Any help with learning about design patterns and where/when to use them
  • Willing to do "homework", so if you know of coding problems/exercises that can help me learn, that would be awesome!
  • Someone to bounce questions off of (especially dumb ones!)
  • Someone with professional PHP experience would be great!
Logistics:
  • Since I have a full-time job, my availability is nights and weekends
  • Skype, e-mail, slack, and/or meeting up at a coffee shop/bar/park/restaurant are all fine with me!
  • Whatever time you have available is perfect. I know everyone is busy, so I am not requesting for a lot of time.
  • Anywhere in Fairfax County, Arlington, or Alexandria is preferred for meeting up, but I can swing into DC if needed (not as frequently, though)

A little about myself:
My name is Whitney Yiu. I have been attending the DC PHP Meetup for a couple of years now, so you probably know my face, if not my name. I am a .NET developer (I know, I know...the dark side....), but am very interested in learning PHP. I live in Virginia, play soccer, and have gotten into a love/hate relationship with politics since I moved to the DC area.

[Downtown Dharma Listserve] Looking for housing with a sangha buddy?

Hello sangha friends. Wanted to let some great Buddhists know that we have a SMALL bedroom available for rent in our Columbia Heights apartment available March 1st and are hoping to find a kind, compatible person to join us.

The people: We are one queer woman in her late twenties, one straight woman in her mid 20s and one small cat. One is an EPA worker and the other an educator and server. We are very active women, but low key at home. We are committed to a safe, homey environment where we talk openly, laugh easily, and support one another.  We both love to cook and our house is on a shared grocery bill system that is both economical, convenient, and affordable. We have a shared cleaning schedule and let each other know when we are having friends over (which is usually a couple times a week). We often host friends from out of town to crash on the couch and enjoy shared time together, when we can make it happen. We are committed to low energy and water use, recycling, organic and environmentally friendly products.

The house: The house is a 2 level row house. There is a studio unit on the bottom floor that is separate from our unit and we are friendly with our downstairs neighbors. The shared first floor of our apartment has a large living/dining room and a great fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher.  Washer/dryer is located in the unit on this floor as well. There is a small back porch. The second floor has our bedrooms and bathrooms.

The location: We are in Columbia Heights about 15 minutes from both the Columbia Heights and U Street Metro stops and close to many bus lines. 2 blocks from Banneker Public Pool for summertime swim fun. It's awesome.

Details on the room:  $550 per month plus shared utilities (typically ~$100); Move in date: March 1, 2017. Room is small (9x8),  fits a twin bed and bookshelf with a small closet, and shares a full bathroom with one other queer woman roomie. One window faces Sherman Ave, NW.

We hope to find people who are in a similar place in their life, fun, and down to earth. Please contact me if you know of someone or put us in touch! Please do not repost!

Best,

Em
